Download not complete error

Postby ZthueeSpam » 28 Jun 2017, 16:09

Hi guys. Yesterday I did the "fix joining/hosting games" thing - options -> clear -> game files, to try to fix the problem with joining games (which I seem to have to do about once a week!? that's another problem that I was never able to solve... why does this happen in the first place?!). Anyway, this time after deleting game data, I found that two of the game files refuse to download from the server. As soon as the download attempts to start, it immediately pops up "download not complete". All the other files download successfully, it's only these two files that fail. The game then launches - if it's a team game, the lobby is corrupt and unusable, and if it's a 1v1 game, it desyncs immediately.

The appropriate part of the forever.log is this:
2017-06-28 13:47:21,631 INFO fa.updater Updater: Downloading http://content.dev.faforever.com/faf/up ... s.3684.nx2
2017-06-28 13:47:42,151 WARNING fa.updater File download not complete.
2017-06-28 13:47:42,151 INFO fa.updater Updater: Downloading http://content.dev.faforever.com/faf/up ... v.3684.nx2
2017-06-28 13:47:59,026 WARNING fa.updater File download not complete.
2017-06-28 13:47:59,078 INFO fa.check checking updated files: ['textures.nx2', 'env.nx2']

I tried manually downloading the two files via the URLs in the log but only got a 2.59kb file (same for both, even though they should be around 10mb!?). Anyway, I was hoping it might just be a temporary glitch but I've tried to delete game data again a few times in the last two days and it's still failing exactly the same way. I asked on aeolus if anyone else is having the problem but nobody responded so I guess it's just me!? But I don't understand what has gone wrong... Any help appreciated.

I see that someone else had the same (or at least similar) problem on the 25th of June - specifically with textures.3684.nx2, same file as me. But he said he was able to bypass the problem by downloading the file from another computer... I tried that and I still got the same 2.59kb file instead of the full sized file.

Please inspect those files - they could be html files from an upstream proxy server trying to do a redirect or reporting some error or something similar.

The download could also be interrupted by your antivirus - please test if disabling it helps.

Otherwise, it'll be a problem with your internet connection / your ISP.

There's a small enough amount of it that looks legible like it's a legit file containing texture related data? I tried disabling antivirus and I tried downloading the file on another computer - same problem. So I guess it could be my ISP with some corrupt cached copy of it... But difficult to determine since I don't have another internet connection to compare to.

the nx2 files are just renamed archives you can unpack them if you want to take a look at the files in them

OK, I just renamed the nx2 file to zip and opened it in WinRAR, I see it as a genuine zip file and it opens but I get 'unexpected end of file' error in WinRAR. I've attached the forever.log. So just to confirm, if my connection was 'normal', when I enter this URL in a browser, I should get a 10mb file downloaded?

Also, I tried clearing my browser cache and it hasn't helped. But I noticed that if I download that textures nx2 file in Chrome, it gives me a .nx2 file and if I use the Edge browser, I get a .zip file. Exactly the same file 2.59kb, just different extension. Strange.

OK, I've made some progress. I installed the Tor browser to get a 'new' internet connection independent from my ISP and suddenly, I was able to download the full sized files without a problem. However, I tried placing the files where I guessed they belong: C:\ProgramData\FAForever\gamedata with all the other nx2 files. However, when I try to join a game, I still get the same "download not complete" error, so either I placed the files in the wrong location or FAF is not recognising them... What next?

OK, more progress. I've fixed it now. I didn't realise that FAF renames the files to remove the build number, so I manually renamed the files I downloaded using Tor and it seems to be working now. How strange though. I hope whatever bug is stopping me from downloading the updates resolves itself, or I'll have to do this every time there's an update....

Definitely sounds like a problem that has nothing to do with FAF - it's your computer or your ISP.
