Freeze/Desync

Postby Kaasisbaas » 25 May 2017, 16:35

Hello,

I started playing since about a week ago mostly without problems. But since today I get a freeze or desync which results in a crash every game.

Here are my logs. Last game was a sudden freeze right at the start of the game.

Hello Kaasisbaas,

i checked your logs and found nothing unusual.

Can you discribe the error ?

Was it a freeze or a desync or do you got both errors? freeze AND desync?

If the game has a desync, we need a log directly after the desync. In this case there are different game files (versions) that cause the desync.

If your game freeze, does it compleatly freeze, or can you click on units to see the tootip, or does the main menu open when you click it ?

I saw you where in a game with many players. Do you know if someone else had the same problems ?

Greetings Uveso.

Hello Uveso,

I can't really describe the error, since it doesn't let me look at the error message it gives when it desyncs. I can only close the error report through alt-tab, which then closes supcom.

It's a complete freeze, I thought that if I can still click and select units it's someone else that's having problems.

I'll play some more games later today, and i'll post the logs again when I get a desync.

I haven't tried reinstalling supreme commander yet, would that have any effect?

Edit: I get a desync and later a crash or the game freezes and I can only close the program externally, not both. And I don't know if anyone else experienced the same problems.

Greetings,

Kaas

Hello Kaasisbaas,

well, a desync does not give you an error message. You will see an ingame window that you are no longer sync to player xyz. You can still klick to ignore the message and continue playing.
Every game is calculating a checksum from the actual simulation. if the checksum differs between players, then you will get a desync. This will occour mostly if you have different game or Mod files.

And there are some different kinds of freeze;
1. The game and your computer freezes. (you can't move the mouse then, and maybe the sound will play a loop)
2. The game freezes and you can klick what you want inside the game, nothing will react.
3. Only the simulation-thread of the game freezed. You still can select a unit, but you can't issue any commands to the unit.
4. Only the userinterface-thread of the game is frozen. The game will continue but you can't klick a unit or something else.

If there is an errormesage and you can't see it, maybe it can help if you play the game in windowmode. Then you don't need to ALT+TAB.
If you see an error like "EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION (0xc0000005) at address 0x0047a820", just post this line with your error address.

Reinstalling the game can help, but only if you deinstall the game AND manually clean or delete the gamedirectory. Same with FAF-client.
Or install it to a different folder.

Default questions:
What gameversion are you running ? newest ?
Are you starting the game over the FAF-client (FA Forever) or with desktop-shortcut ?
Are you using any mods ? UI or Game?
Do you have those freezes only in multiplayer or also in singleplayer games ?

Greetings, uveso.

Re: Freeze/Desync

Hello Uveso,

I did click to ignore the message, but it always resulted in a crash a few minutes later, as it said it would.
How can I have different game/mod files? I haven't played with game mods yet (though I was in a lobby with a 2x resources mod).

My pc doesn't freeze/crash, but I couldn't do anything ingame anymore. I'm not sure if my mouse still worked. I will pay close attention today.

Answering your questions:
1. I think I would be using the latest? I installed the games (supcom+FA) through steam and then just downloaded the client. I could play for about a week with only a few desyncs/random crashes before.
2. I'm playing multiplayer through the faf client.
3. I don't use game mods. Though I did use the UI mod Quicktemplate v1. I also used UIParty 9 and common mod tools for a brief while but it didn't work properly, so I removed both. I've also already tried disabling quicktemplate (so I have no mods active), but it still crashes/freezes,
4. I've only experienced it in multiplayer, but I've only played multiplayer until yesterday. I could played the coop campaign (on my own) without issues. Do you mean by singleplayer through the original game client? or through FAF? I haven't tried both yet.

it was also my first day trying Seraphim, if that could have anything to do with it.

Is it also possible to get usable logs from replays?

I'll try a clean install and see if that works. Otherwise i'll be back later with better answers and hopefully more logs. For a clean install I also need to remove the data from supcom in the local folder? and that from FAF in the program data folder? Can I still use my old game.prefs?

Edit: I also edited my game.prefs to add a few hotkeys. Could that have broken it? well i'll try to play with a fresh game.prefs too to see if anything changes.

Hello Kaasisbaas,

make a backup from Game.prefs, then you can copy it back, if this isn't the problem.

If you had this desync window, then i am 90% sure you have different game files.

Go to steam and check all supcom files, then deinstall FAForever AND delete the c:\programmdata\FAForever folder.

Hello Uveso,

I did a clean install, played a few games and I haven't experienced any problems yet. I will test this weekend if my old game.prefs was the problem and i'll let you know.

Thanks for your help.

Re: Freeze/Desync

Hello Uveso,

I have good news and bads news.

The goods news:
I've played even more games without issues, not even a few desyncs/random lobby kicks, which I had before I couldn't play any game without it freezing/desyncing. I think a clean install fixed the issue.

The (slightly) bad news:
I've also played games with my old game.prefs, so I don't think that was the culprit. I have no idea what could have caused it then because of me messing with game files.

Thank you for your help, do you have more questions for me about the issue? Do I also have to mark the issue as fixed or do the moderators do that?

Greetings,

Kaas

Hello Kaasisbaas,

thanks for your reply.

And the good news is, i am now 100% sure, your desync was caused by "unclean" game files.
This also means, your old game.prefs is fine.

I am no sure, but i guess you can't set this thread to "solved". :)
