NAT error / not connecting / router / port forwarding

Postby Spam » 21 May 2012, 23:25

Hi all,

I have just joined FAF and am experiencing problems. To get straight to the point, I'm not able to connect to many of the games. I had similar problems a few years ago when GPG Net was still around, to the point where I gave up on SupCom after a short period of trying to get it to work. I also have problems with Company of Heroes, which has thrown up NAT Connection errors when trying to connect to games.

My understanding from the hundreds of forums etc that I have been revisiting recently is that it's my router, and I'm in a pickle because I have tried and failed to replace it.

My router is a Zyxel P-660HW-T1v3, provided by my ISP - Post Office UK. This router seems to have strict NAT controls, and the ISP seems to be unwilling to let you switch it out with a different one... whenever I connect one, it just doesn't connect to the internet.

I have tried many things - all the usual port forwarding, the UPnP options in FAF, static IP creation, disabling firewalls, slaughtering goats, sacrificing virgins.... but all to no avail. When trying the new routers I have set them up with all the settings that people have suggested but they still don't get recognised.

So here (at last) is my question:

Does anyone on have a step by step walkthrough for getting my router configured to let me join FAF games? Happy to provide DXDiags, system info etc as may be necessary. I am confident that there are others out there who have had this problem, and resolved it, but you never see the full picture of what they did on the forums!

If I have missed a thread that covers this already on this forum then apologies... I haven't found anything yet that works.

Hoping to join you soon in FA carnage -

This looks like it should be helpful - while the model number is slightly different, it should still apply: http://portforward.com/english/routers/ ... mander.htm

If you still need help I'm sure someone will be able to provide more detailed assistance. I would recommend first trying to put your PC in a DMZ to test if you can connect at all - if you can, then you should try opening and forwarding ports to avoid needlessly putting your PC in a DMZ, but you will at least know that it is possible and will have a fallback option.

Thanks uberge3k,

The portforward page you provide is the one I have tried following so far, but without success. Could you or anyone else link me to details of setting up a dmz in this context?

Thanks again for your help.

Did you try using a random port in FAF config with upnp disabled and enabled?
For some reason I can only join games now with a random port and upnp disabled.

I just moved back home for the summer and have the exact same router/problems. My isp is centurylink.

Either the router or the isp is really strict about this crap. If someone who knows a lot about networking can help me via skype/teamviewer that would be really awesome.
