That's not what they said though

In W7, you can manually restart the "Windows Audio" service from the control panel item "Services"; it fixes a bunch of audio problems. Too bad though that FA needs to restart to take advantage. VLC, browsers and pretty much everything else doesn't need to restart.

This happened again when my system took the newest windows 10 round of updates.

Confirming an earlier thread, installing the realtek driver fixed the issue. I downloaded the one released via MSI on 2016-05-06. It was a whopping 268mb download, but audio is up and running again.

Hi guys, so I've been having what I assume is the same issue here for quite a while now. I keep on fixing it, but it keeps on breaking itself.
Why is it only FAF that does this and no other games I own?

Basically, Every FIRST time a sound is played, I hear it

EDIT: I'm on Windows 8.1
Refuse to get Windows 10.

hello,
I come back from years and so I had to read this thread, some update:
The issue is still here with newer realtek HD audio.

Instead of using a now quite old driver that may not support lastest realtek chip or, partially, a good workaround, I think, is to use another audio sound device, like usb headphones or the HDMI output from your graphic card (if you have an audio system that accept HDMI of course, in this case), or a real soundcard (asus xonar, creative sound blaster (yes they still exist).

ALC1220 via optical output: does not works fine (crapy audio and crashes on steam FA wile leaving games) and number of speakers cannot be configured.
AMD Radeon HD audio works well over HDMI, can be forced to stereo, if needed.
