Game Lagg

Postby TheCornishGinger » 02 Apr 2016, 13:50

Hi so I've had supreme commander forged alliance for a while now and this problem has been bugging me from when I first got the game. It seems to run at very low frame rates and this even includes 1fps. And I know your thinking its obviously because you don't have a good pc right?? Well the weird thing is my sister also plays this game with a much lower spec pc than mine without as much lagg, even on equal settings. These are the spaces below:

--------------------------------------------------------------------
My PC: (custom)

CPU: Intel i3 4170
GPU: Nvidia Geforce GTX 560
HDD: Samsung 300GB (x4) (raid x2 main, x2 backup)
OS: Windows 10 (64-Bit)
MOTHERBRD: Asus z97-P
RAM: 4Gb DDR3 @1600Mhz (x2) (NON-ECC)

--------------------------------------------------------------------
Sisters PC: (HP compaq dx2420)

CPU: Intel Pentium Dual Core E5200
GPU: Nvidia Geforce GT 620
HDD: Hitachi Deskstar 500GB
OS: Windows 10 (64-Bit)
MOTHERBRD: Unknown
RAM: 3Gb DDR2 @800Mhz (1GB + 2GB) (NON-ECC)

------------------------------------------------------------------

So there you go, that's why I don't understand this at all, could someone help shed some light on the subject??

So, in summary can the game run better in a E5200 + 620 then in a i3-4170 with a gtx560, yes it can...
specially because you have two graphic cards in the i3 setup and you need to assign FA to run in the gtx560
also the i3 will get slower with heat

ok, how to troubleshoot your issue, you need : http://www.guru3d.com/files-details/msi-afterburner-beta-download.html you will get a cpu usage and a graphics usage on the log, so you can have a clear idea of what's going on

And what do you mean by two graphics cards? I only have one Nvidia Geforce GTX 560, do you mean the onboard gpu??

I do believe that cpu has onboard graphics, anyway, that software will tell what gou the games is using and it will also tell you if you CPU or GPU bottleneck

Thanks for the advice I had a look at my gpu usage and temperature while playing the game and compared that to what they are like when Im not on the game (idle) and the graphics card is definitely being used, but at times even when im lagging massively the usage is hovering around 20-30% and the temperature is only 35-40c.

So then I looked at my cpu core temperatures and usage and I was very intrigued by what I saw. When playing the game the cores individually were all running at 42-45c but the usage is a whole different story...

Because I have an Intel I3 4170 I have a dual core cpu but 4 total cores (because of the logical cores) and core 2,3,4 were running at around 30-60% usage but interestingly core 1 was running at 95-100% constantly, but the overall still being only around 60%. So I then closed supreme commander and I noticed core 1 still idled around 95-100%!

So my guess it the cpu usage isn't being shared evenly and as a result of putting all strain on core 1, the game cannot cope as well as it should with even simple things such as the title screen, or UI.

afaik, this game uses 1 core intensive and another, but not that much, anyway, in that case your lag is caused by your cpu, you can try to assign forgedalliance.exe proccess to another cpu core, see if it helps
also, check what is using your cpu in idle

I just reinstalled windows and it cut down my cpu usage massively, all cores idling around 5-25% with an overall usage of 0-10 but as I start to use programs core 1 still seems to work harder than other cores. on the other hand nowwhen running the game my cores are not maxing out (for now) and Im getting waaaay better framerates.

If this happens again though in the next few days I will contact you again, thanks for all your help.
