Reinstalling FAF and the .MSI file appears to do nothing.

Postby FantasticMrFox88 » 06 Feb 2016, 04:43

I've had to go and uninstall FAF in an attempt to solve a problem with games not booting from FAF since the new server change. Anyway, first complaint is that the FAF.msi file takes almost an hour to download, when I should have a downspeed of several hundred Mbps. Second complaint is that I double-click the file, Windows Security says it stopped it from running, and then I click Run Anyway and nothing happens. Norton gives it a "trusted" ranking, and when I rightclick the .MSI file there is no "Run as administrator" option. This is really weird. Now when I double-click it a dialogue box appears to open but nothing happens. I'm now downloading the .MSI again to try and fix the issue, and yet again it's predicting a 2 hour download for a 29.3 MB file. I've checked my speed - it's well in the hundreds of MB per second so this is absolutely not on my end.

[Edit]: I've since right-clicked it and checked the box that says "Unblock," and clicked Apply. Now I double-click it, Norton says it's safe, but nothing happens. I double-click it again. A program blinks in and out of existence. Nothing happens. I don't think it's Windows Security getting in the way. I think the .MSI file is borked.

Tempting to try it but something tells me it's not Norton's fault, because I installed FAF before while running Norton and it was just fine. I'll fidget with its settings first before turning it off completely. Last time it was "Windows Security" that appeared to mess things up so I don't know.

Oh it's not a virus I'm even concerned about. I've done everything falling short of uninstalling Norton because I just find it a hassle to uninstall and reinstall it, but I will definitely try it if nothing else works. From what I'm seeing it seems that the file just doesn't launch at all. I'm concerned that it may be because the file downloads to about 10%, with an estimated 2 hours remaining, and then suddenly "finishes." It's as if the connection drops and I get a half a file instead of the real thing. But I will try following the guide and get back to you, SpdyGonzales. Thanks for your help... hope it works!

Halfway through your guide now, SpdyGonzales, and now the link on the FAForever website to download the .msi file is returning a 404 error. Hopefully it will be fixed soon. Disabled firewall antivirus etc and the .msi I downloaded a few days ago still isn't launching.

Everything is Norton's fault. Shit software. Get rid, and never look back.

Well I followed SpdyGonzales' fix and it worked. The issue had no problems with Norton, which identified FAF as safe. I understand why a lot of people hate it but I despise AVG and every "free" anti-virus software out there. If I can find a better service out there or a comprehensive pros and cons of using this or that and the other anti-virus I'll happily switch. But that's neither here or there. SpdyGonzales' fix seemed to have solved the problem, that and an apparent update to the downloads page on the main FAForever.com website. So, either I needed to do a clean install (which I did), or the server sorted its shit out and the borked .msi download is no longer borked (it downloaded smoothly and correctly this time around, unlike the last few times). You can all blame my anti-virus all you want but I'm convinced it was either server-side or clean install that fixed the issue.

Thank you, SpdyGonzales, for your help.
