Can't open FAF

Please Tech Support Cat, help me!

I'm experiencing problems when opening Forged Alliance Forever. It gives me an error message that I have no idea what it means.

Permission denied... well maybe you should set FAF to run as admnistrator... right click on faf icon and run as admmistrator..

That's why he's got this problem in the first place.

Don't run FAF as administrator (or any other program that don't need it for that matter), it's unecessary at best and dangerous at worst.

It's easy to say dont run as ADM, speed2 said the same thing, but there are threads that run as adm solved. like this one.

We don't know how his pc is set... maybe he's not even the only user...

Also as i said to speed2, i've been running FAF and FA as adm since 2012.

i think this should solve his problem, if you don't think so, at least you , as moderator, should post a more usefull information to the thread... tell me what NOT to do don't solve the thread... what then? what should friend Nickaye do?

I'd advise looking at the permissions for the relevant file in the file properties window. Right-click on the file specified in the error message, click on properties, go to permissions or security (can't remember) and look at the permissions for the user account you're using to launch FAF. If it isn't enabled, try enabling "full control", but only for the aforementioned user. See if that works, if it doesn't or makes things worse, you can always easily revoke it again.

I dont know how good you are in this, but Sheeo is in head of FAF develop so he knows about how FAF works. And even before him ZePilot who made FAF few years ago was always saying, never run FAF as admin.

True, if he's trying to run FAF from a different user account he'll encounter this very same error. I made the assumption that he used 'run as adminstrator' to encounter this, since that's the way the majority of people would end up there.

Just because you've been doing something wrong since 2012 doesn't mean it's something to advise other people to do. ede posted good advice on how to fix permissions, but this is tech support for FAF, not tech support for windows -- so I'm not going to post advice on how to use your operating system.


Of course to avoid this happening in the future we need to make the client not write anything to c:\programdata at run time, but only at install time. This isn't really a priority on the client, but we'll get there eventually. While at it I'll make sure it drops elevated priveleges if it was launched with that, since it neither needs them nor wants them (for your own sake).

What ede proposed to do it's only possible to system adm user to do , or a user with adm permissions... all other users will have those option in gray and wont be able to change... like this...

Requiring Admin rights to change security settings on a file isn't the same as running FAF with admin privileges, if that was what you meant? From what Sheeo said I assumed that running FAF as admin might mess with file permissions in relevant folders, so looking at the permissions manually was my attempt at a more conservative solution . I was just assuming that OP at least has access to admin privileges, so I don't know whether or not he can change the security settings there. If it doesn't work for him then I'm sorry .
You definitely don't need any elevated privileges beyond a standard admin account though (and even a non-admin should work normally).

I'm not pledging to authority or claiming to be one here, but it's rather common knowledge to not use elevated priveleges for anything that doesn't need it.

Don't run FAF as administrator even to 'test' whether or not this makes your stuff run (Of course it will, given permission issues). The dialogue you linked will allow you to change permissions even as a normal user, but pop up the UAC dialogue first, which gives you temporary elevated privileges.

Running FAF as administrator means it has permanently elevated privileges. You do not want this.
