WWPC Player Development Effectiveness Discussion

Postby Morax » 25 Mar 2015, 15:40

Hi all,

Part of the reason I love the WWPC 1v1 and 2v2 is that it really focuses the development of talent and competition! I've personally seen SilverKronos, yorick, partytime, and Kopia develop quite a bit since they've been active. I'd like to try and promote it more to newcomers of the server as I've often found it's not well-known to people who don't participate nor are active on the forums. So far my best strategy has been to tell people in games who "find FaF and are playing their first game."

Could you four and anyone else who feels they have constructive criticism say what they like about how it's being run and make suggestions?

I should probably participate more in my own tournament since partytime is kicking my butt in the ladder now : /. Good job, sir.

Thanks,

Morax

I promote this tournament when people ask me for advice exactly because of its educational value. Because if you lose it gives a good replay of someone who is better than you winning, and then it allows for you to observe how they play and what they do. Unlike on ladder where you will get some silly 5x5 map which has a lower skill threshold.

When i joined for 1v1 U1500 WWPC i hardly had any chance there. After few months i finally got the U1500 title and was holding it for quite long time. I grabbed my new experiance and headed for a ladder to improve my rating and then mvoed to U1900, where i also needed couple of weeks to actually be able to get the title and hold it for a while. So if you want to improve in 1v1 or 2v2, WWPC is one of the best ways to do it!

I remember my first WWPC game in U1100 and getting raped hardcore. I watched the replay and saw some mistakes and started to improve and eventually did my first game on U1500, where I'm pretty sure I got raped too. I watched those replays too, and improved in this way (as well as WWPC motivating me to play more ladder so I can get better faster). Beating Morax was a goal I aspired for a long, long time.

I held the title for only 1 week before yorick beat me in a Bo5 for it, and then had pretty epic games with SilverKronos in a Bo5 as well as on Syrtis knockouts. All of these replays were watched to see what was done wrong, and the improving continued even more.

WWPC is a place where if you put in work, you will get results. Even if you don't get that awesome, sexy avatar, you will still only be able to get better from the games you play. I will put emphasis on the fact that if you play the ladder AND you play WWPC, you will greatly improve and have much more fun in the game.

Hmm it's an interesting one. I'm probably in the minority of players who don't benefit much from WWPC for improvement. It's a brilliant thing to have such high intensity games and rewards for winning for all levels of player. My title wins, especially the U1500, have been my most memorable ones on the server - the losses are easily the most frustrating or depressing. But my periods of improvement have been from when I stopped playing WWPC and just played ladder and custom 1v1s with much better players than me, rather than practicing for finals or watching my replays. I think partytime has actually gone backwards on the ladder since he got active, so it'd be interesting to hear what he thinks about it (spoiler: I think he's going to mention Zock lessons), and Morax I'm pretty sure you've been low-mid 1400 at least since I first got in to U1500 around 6 months ago.

manread's point of view would be interesting - if I remember rightly my first WWPC game was against him, for the very first U1100 final, which I won in 3 pretty quick games. Now he's got a mortgage on the U1500 title and I have only qualified for one final, which I lost in 4 horribly quick games against SilverKronos, since the tournament went fortnightly and I started playing again. I dunno if that's from his Kalvirox lessons or WWPC activity.

What I do think is great about WWPC is it has a different approach because you know what the map is before you can play. So you can come up with your strategy before hand. You can make a build order. You can watch 2000 rated replays. You can watch how your opponent plays that match. Notably one time I was up against manread on roanoke and I saw his replays - he did the exact same early-double-transport build order in each game. So I made a counter build order that had two inties above his base at nearly the exact second the first one came out. By investing this time I absolutely annihilated him for the first few minutes and then he demolished me and won.

WWPC is different to ladder because you can prepare for the map and prepare for the player. If that's what you like then WWPC is awesome.

I think any skill increase of mine mainly comes from Zock lessons and playing tonnes of ladder. However, by practicing for WWPC I spent a lot of time focusing on specific maps which to be honest is something I otherwise never did. That also led to me refining build orders over and over... the way I build now is completely different to how it used to be.

Even thought as Partytime. I like the fact that we know the map before playing, and the possbility to watch pro replay, train and make counter BO. (the 2 weeks period allow us to spend time on this)
I don't play ladder that much (almost never), because we are often many BFA connected and play teamgames..
I like the challenge WWPC is offering, and it will lead me to play ladder in a few times.. Hopefully after training a while I could join U1500 part or grab Petric title :
Good vibes between players and nice follow up by TDs.

And also I love that badass avatar  (because it's my only lonely one ^^ )

Well the first time I went into WWPC was when it first started and I got absolutely annihilated, this was when I was a noob (ok a bigger noob XD) since getting a lot better and joining the U1500 (which I could have won many weeks before if I knew how to not do stupid things with my com, something WWPC finally made me memorise). As for the replays they are a great source of learning from stupid mistakes.

However, as for getting better, I'd say playing vs Kalvirox did a lot for me as it forced me to play at a better level or lose (or play at a better level and lose anyway :P)
