FAF/FA on win7 64bit

Postby arialth » 05 Mar 2014, 06:06

I'm encountering a very frustrating issue where FA (whether through explorer or FAF lobby) refuses to launch.

No error logs are generated during any attempt to launch the game, at least by the game itself. The only log I receive is in windows event viewer (posted below) and from FAF (also posted below).

Steps to reproduce:
1) Open FAF
2) Try to host game by doubleclicking Forged Alliance Forever, then clicking Host Game
3) Open task manager to watch forgedalliance.exe briefly appear
>>>FAF Log
forever.log
forever.log
(126.07 KiB) Downloaded 104 times

Alternately:
1) Browse to C:\ProgramData\FAForever\bin
2) Doubleclick supremecommander.exe or forged alliance.exe
3) Open task manager to watch both briefly appear (then vanish)

Here is what I get from windows event viewer every time:
faf error system event.txt
From windows event viewer
(487 Bytes) Downloaded 91 times

Presumably (!) this is crashing on either loading the library into ram or attempting to execute a nonexistent function call?

Anyways, things I've tried:

1) Tried running the executables from cmd with the /log 'helpme.txt' switch. No luck, no logs produced
2) Tried running as admin
3) Tried logging in as admin, then clearing the read only bit, then running as admin again
4) Tried running in compat mode for sp2 and sp3
5) Tried running with /nosound
6) Disabled comodo and bitdefender
6) Let steam run its install of directX prior to launching FA, then running FAF

My hardware:
CPU: Intel core i5-3350p
Vid: Sapphire Dual X Radeon R9 270X
Ram: 8GB 1333mhz

Attached a stack traceback I pulled from windbg, if that helps anyone ever:

Additional troubleshooting performed:

x) Opened fa using windows debugger's logger.exe. During this I get the weirdest DLL module trying to load, then instantly unload; picture attached
logger weird dll.png
Weirdest dll ever
logger weird dll.png (103.36 KiB) Viewed 2369 times
. Logger won't write a proper log with this program due to, in my suspicion, the weird dll name.
x+1) Disabled DEP on the executables with no success

However, this is way, way beyond my ability to troubleshoot alone. I need ideas :C
