Establishing Connection...

I recently purchased Supreme Commander Forged Alliance and as im sure most people do, i want to get involved in the FAF community. Unfortunately, i cannot figure out how to get my computer working properly. Steam continues to say "Steam.exe (main exception): To run Steam, you must first connect to the Internet" and Forged Alliance Forver lobby says "establishing connection..." Now im assuming these problems both stem from the same place. So if i fix one, the other will fix itself. I know im connected to the internet because i can surf the web. As far as i can tell ive disabled every firewall on my computer as well as on my router. I even called up verizon tech support and they were of no help. Everything they told me i had already known. I honnestly have no idea what to do to try and fix this. If someone could offer assistance i would greatly appreciate it. If i cant manage to fix this issue i will have wasted $15 on this game which would really be a shame. Keep in mind im probably not as good with computers as most others so please explain in simple words. Thanks!

Ive tried looking through the wiki several times. My problem seems to be slightly unique.

That person seemed to have problems in game. My problem is that i can't even open steam to install the game. Steam thinks my computer doesn't have connection to internet, but it does.
