Windwos 8.1 Preview warning

Postby EnderC » 01 Jul 2013, 16:41

Hi everyone.

I'd like to put this post up as a warning to those that like to be on the bleeding edge with their computers. I recently installed the Windows 8.1 Preview to check out some of the upcoming changes. The update made some changes to DirectX which, I can only guess, triggered these issues.

Ever since I've installed it, Forged Alliance, through both Steam and the FAF lobby client, performs terribly. The game seems to struggle responding to user input. The game runs smoothly until you actually try and use the mouse. In game, the cursor flickers when stationary, and becomes invisible when moving it, making it very difficult to select specific units, or click on buttons, leading to a very frustrating experience. In one-on-one matches, my opponents claim to experience lag, but it may only be when I'm the host, as I played a 4-man FFA without any issues by the other team.

If anyone can recommend some free video recording software, I can make a video to better demonstrate some of the issues.

The worst part in all this, for my pioneering efforts? There's no straightforward way to uninstall the Preview update. Woe is me. Microsoft, you've turned one of my favourite games into a nigh-unplayable mess of frustration.

try this:
http://www.bandicam.com/downloads/

you can record 10 minute videos with it for free. after the recording has stopped, you can start a new one!
the only downside is a watermark...

I've got a video uploaded here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jvInnXrXSqg

Note the stuttering on the title screen (look at the credits at the bottom of the screen as they scroll by). Stuttering is seen throughout. The fps counter didn't get recorded in the video but gameplay tries to run at 30 fps when it can, but frequently drops to 4-11.

Yea, I've been using windows 8.1 Preview since the morning of their release. WORKS GRREAT FOR ME. I recommend updating your drivers and perform all updates in Windows 8.1
I've played many games since, and two epic 2.5 hour long 6 player FFAs... No problems.

Have you recently changed your graphic settings? The way that is performing reminds me of when I would try n see what MAX looked like while I knew my GPU certainly couldn't handle it... Or trying to play while running prime 95 when my q6600 was clocked less than 3ghz... I'd honestly start checking settings, everywhere - in game, in gpu control... lol

I really doubt the settings have anything to do with it. My PC's been able to run SupComm on max settings for years now. I hadn't changed anything in-game in weeks.
