Choosing an optimal CPU for Forged Alliance?

How do I choose a CPU that will allow me to play Forged Alliance without game affecting lag for the majority of situations? Being on a map with 1000 units without breaking the game is one of my particular goals.

Clock speed doesn't seem to matter and neither does the number of cores since FA is not architected to take advantage of them. I don't want to buy a new CPU just to discover it only gives me a marginal improvement for single core games- but I don't know what to look for.

general thing: Intel > AMD
i have a have i5 2500 and i run fine with it, however i7 would ofc be better
