Incompatible Version?

Postby jesheb » 14 Feb 2013, 01:37

I purchased the game through Steam. I am trying to connect with a friend who is using a retail version.

Whenever I try to connect to his game it tells me that I need to patch, and that my version is incompatible. When i download the patch, it gives me an error message

Error: Unable to locate ForgedAlliance.exe

After paging endlessly through everything, I cannot find what it wants. I have looked through all the files and cannot find anywhere to fix this issue.

Please help :)

This is normal and not related to FAF.

You should both use FAF, it will solve that problem easily.

the retail version is 1.5.3596 when no patch is installed. it can be patched to version 1.5.3599, though. when you want to install faf lobby you need to patch to 1.5.3599 before that.

the steam version is 1.5.3603 (beta).

you can try to find the beta patch 1.5.3603 on the internet, but i have no experience with it. a lot of people complain about this version, because it is not balanced.

the easiest solution is for you both is to download faforever lobby (from faforever.com), then both versions get patched to version 1.5.3622 and you have a lot other advantages (better graphics, new faction, irc support, map vault, mods) ! when you have installed the faforever lobby you can still play your old version, when you like it.

Even with the 3603 it won't work. FAF is the only way.

I really wasn't sure if it was appropriate to post this here or start a new thread but:
Why is it, after Dl the lobby and patching, I can open FA and it still shows 3603 instead of the 3622?
I've played online with the lobby so i know my patches are correct. Does it not update the registry?

The neat thing about FAF is that it doesn't overwrite the original installation. That way, you can still play with a friend who uses the Steam version without making Steam freak out. To play 3622, look for the Forged Alliance Forever folder in C:\ProgramData (I think, correct me if I'm wrong) and use the forgedalliance.exe in the data folder.

Yes you are correct, although i had to made hidden folders visible beforehand to see it. Thank you.
Now what if i wanted to add the patches to the original game?

I wouldn't recommend it. There's no need. Think of it as two separate games: FAF and FA Steam. If you tried to put the FAF files in the Steam directory it would probably mess things up really really badly. Like I said, if you want to play FAF singleplayer, just use the ForgedAlliance.exe in C:\ProgramData\FAForever\bin, instead of starting the game from Steam.

I've got a shortcut to it on my desktop.
