Firewall Issue?

I kept getting the error, "connection to host timed out" in game lobbies, so I turned off my firewall. That seemed to solve the issue, as I was able to play the next game.

Could it possibly be an issue with my firewall settings? I haven't had this issue until today, it was working fine all of yesterday. The game crashed a few times (the game, not the FAF client), so if there's a logfile somewhere and it would be useful, just let me know and I can find it and copy/paste it in here.

Just wondering what the issue might be because I'd prefer to have my firewall up I'll be playing a couple more games today so I'll update if I have the issue again (will be playing with firewall down).

The game is using a peer to peer protocol between players.

The timeout message happens when you don't receive any packet from a player after some time. So it can be a firewall issue, or the guy has some connection problems.

This seems to be another issue, but I figured I might as well post this here and see if you can decipher what it means. I've gotten this a couple times, it crashes in lobby and I get this in the background. When it happens I have to restart the game client. So sorry for this block of text

I haven't had any issues (well, I have, but they weren't on my end, they were other people's issues) with the firewall down, I'll try it and see if there's a difference with it up next time I play. If it does turn out to be a firewall issue, I'll post again.

Let me know if I should have created a new thread for this, I just didn't want to be obnoxious and make another thread so soon.

There isn't a solution in that thread though.

eatfoodnow, while disabling your firewall is one solution, a more permanent solution would be to simply open port 6112 (the default port that FA uses, unless you specified another in FAF's options) in your firewall's settings. As for your crashing issue, I've heard of it a few times but unfortunately am not aware of a solution to it either. What OS are you using? Where is your FA install from (Steam, retail, Impulse, etc)? Silly question, but have you made sure that your drivers are up to date? Was any AV software running at the time?

I'm using 64-bit Windows 7, I installed from steam, I was not running any AV at the time, and my drivers are very up-to-date (I had to wipe my hard drive and re-install everything last week because of some complicated boot issues that I couldn't figure out). Now I do only have Forged Alliance installed through steam this time, and not Supreme Commander vanilla as well, before the big wipe/install last week I had both installed. Could that be a possible issue? Seems unlikely, but I don't know.

Also sorry for not searching to see if somebody else had the same problem before, I'm usually pretty good at remembering to do that but I guess I just blanked on it this time.

Nope. Vanilla is only needed for the map editor to function; the game itself does not require it for anything at all.

It's a long shot, but I would check to make sure that you're running as the administrator and do not have any protections or read only flags on any of the game's folders and FAF's folders.

Unfortunately I can't think of anything else that might cause the error you're seeing. Very strange.

I'm definitely running as administrator and i unset read-only (recursively of course) on every FA and FAF folder I could find. I don't know if there was actually anything read-only in the folder though, since windows seems to mark the read-only box on every folder by default (with a solid fill). Oh well.

Thanks for the help! Hopefully the problem was just a rare bug, even though it happened to me a few times in one day. I never had it before then, so my fingers are crossed.
