Installer hang, next button disabled, problem with VM detect

Postby ShortBuss » 18 Aug 2012, 21:30

Been trying to install since the version came out. It opens up the initial window, Forged Alliance Forever Setup, but the next button never enables, stays greyed out. Have tried many things already. Windows 7 x64 system. UAC is disabled. Have tried running install as admin. Have run windows installer repair utility. Have run ccleaner to clean out files. Made sure the previous install folders are gone. All with same results, next button not enabled.

Launched an install with logging: msiexec /i <file.msi> /l*v logfile.txt. Don't see any errors mentioned. All paths shown look good. Last line in the file, which I assume is what's hanging, appears to be a VM check:

Here are the last few lines on the log:
Action ended 14:05:47: AppSearch. Return value 0.
MSI (c) (80:68) [14:05:47:901]: Doing action: FindRelatedProducts
Action 14:05:47: FindRelatedProducts. Searching for related applications
Action start 14:05:47: FindRelatedProducts.
Action ended 14:05:47: FindRelatedProducts. Return value 1.
MSI (c) (80:68) [14:05:47:903]: Skipping action: AI_DOWNGRADE (condition is false)
MSI (c) (80:68) [14:05:47:903]: Doing action: AI_DetectVM2
Action 14:05:47: AI_DetectVM2.

This is not running within any VM. Do have VirtualBox installed, but not running.

Anyone have any ideas on getting around this install hang?

Also note that .net 4.0 was installed per the link in another recent post on this forum.

Also tried 574 and same problem. Is the AI_DetectVM custom code? Google returns nothing on it. If it is, any ideas what could cause it to hang or how to force it to work or even bypass it?

Checking if you run inside a VM, don't ask me how, this is a MSI standard option.

Thanks, has to be a problem with the system, just strange that it started failing around v571 and worked fine before. Poking around the .msi to see if the check can be skipped as it isn't being run in a VM anyway. Now that I know it's standard MSI I'll keep looking to see if google has any help.

Used an MSI editor to remove the step checking for Virtual Machine during install. With the check gone, install works. I still can't find anyone else failing with Windows Installer on the VM check so I'm not sure what's wrong with the system, but this is a reliable work around for now.

Not posting exact steps taken, but I can PM them if any runs into the same problem. I understand this is an intentional check to prevent people from running within a VM.
