What separates a 1.5k from a 1.6k player? Is the cut off for a "joe" going to be 1500, 1550, or 1600?

Also, do you need to be 1500 at sign up or on the 29th?

The cut off is 1550. If you are 1550, you are a pro. If you are 1549, you are a joe. Yes, it is a bit arbitrary, but it always is. And since the system rounds at 50 it's convenient to pick that. It says the ranks will be reviewed the week before, so i think if you are below 1549 on the 22nd it should be fine. You can just train using unranked matches if you are getting real close to that marker by the way. Since it seems you can pick your partner beforehand you can even try to train with that one together in the fashion the tournament will be held.
