Looking for Aussies

Postby benikens » 21 May 2015, 01:37

Hey so me and a couple of my friends have started a clan, and as any aussie who plays faf knows you can't join many big team games because you will either get booted for 'aussie' lag or end up playing a slideshow half the time. Sometimes things work out for us but so often it is the case we can only play smaller games or 1v1s.

So my fellow aussies please let me know below if you'd like to join our clan (Some Sick Kents) so that we can try to organise more games within our continent and revel in the lag free experience the rest of the world must enjoy. Currently there's only a few of us and we're all < 1000 rating.

SGI is largely Australian/New Zealander, we're not on every day but look for us in the SGI mumble channel.

I did look through the clans list hoping to find a mainly nz/aus clan but without knowing there was no way to find out. Googling it didn't help, wonder if there is place for some kind of recruitment info for clans?

most of the world prob don't care about being region based, but they aren't the ones getting kicked from lobby constantly.
On a related note, if there was more than one proxy and you could choose your closest that would resolve a lot of this. NZ to EU proxy to USA makes for some nice lags, but that's another thread.

The proxy server is in Europe I thought !?

Worst is if two AUS / NZ players proxy to each other. Or if there is someone from south America with proxy to Aus / NZ

yeah, NZ to EU proxy

I know I'd chip in for hosting costs to get a few more distributed proxies up

Proxy latency is currently more bounded by the software rather than the hardware. Distributing proxies is also a bit of a nightmare in terms of implementation.

What about being in lobby, it says "connecting to [player]", then 3 seconds later it says "connection to [player] established". And then one second later it says "lost connection to [player]" and "connection to [player] established [FAF proxy]" ? I thought the time before the proxy would kick in was increased?

It was, the time that is used isn't what you see in your local lobby, however. Before you see the 'Connecting to player []' message the server and client have already been trying to work out how to connect you, infact, most of the procedure has already been executed.

The timeout increase wasn't a silver bullet; while it has decreased the proxy rate a bit, we're still seeing about half of all total connections go through the proxy. The upcoming server update (More about this on the what's new page very soon) will mitigate this and make sure you only ever connect through the proxy when it is a requirement.
