to sort this problem out, we need a constructive discussion about the current ladder system and possible replacements for it: problems, improvements, why it might be better on paper but not accepted in the community, and how to fix that.
having a clear view on what to do is helping the coders to put it in place faster.
some things to think about (changing the system, proposing a new one):
- amount of total ladder maps
- amount of ladder maps playable at a time (smaller pools for rotations?)
- how many maps to rotate, if at all, and how often?
- veto, or upvote maps?
and ofc more...
Problems with the current system, possible fixes?
P (1): despite not selecting any of those, ending up playing unwanted maps over and over
F: remove the "15 most played maps" thingy and take random maps from the pools of the players who could otherwise not match
P (2): playing the same maps multiple times in a row
F: was proposed already, but not yet implemented (?)
here an example of an alternative to the current system:
- a rotation system that uses 20 to 25 maps at a time, the full pool is the current ladder pool
- the current 20-25 are visible in the "select maps" window, each player can veto 5 maps (they can not be played at all then) - leaving at least 10 to 15 maps for a random selection
- each week, 7 maps are rotated:
-- the 2 most vetoed maps during (or at the end) of this week
-- 5 more maps which have been in the current pool the longest
- the 7 new maps that are put in are the 7 maps that have been out for the longest
- if needed, a few of the most loved maps can be put into the total pool twice, so it does not take a long time to be able to play them again
- possibly some mechanism to not play the same 1-3 maps multiple times in a row
