Tutorials in FAF, new councilors task?

Postby Petricpwnz » 23 Feb 2015, 01:45

There just was a talk in aeolus about how tutorials aren't introduced good enough in FAF, and that has been a known issue for quite some time.

So I think with the councilor idea being done it's a good time to get some work done on a tutorials tab. Yeah, as I assume players councilor would be someone doing all the interaction with the community, which tutorials are a part of. Voting is still not finished, but i suggest, whoever will become a councilor should get a team of some pro player and coder to renew the tutorial tab. There are some decent tutorials (like sheppards) out there which also need to be linked in the tutorials tab.

First thing to do is to show a new player that this tab exists. Funny, because its really easy to see, but yeah, we all know that people aren't exactly attentive and even though this is just a community-driven project, they expect it to be done professionally, with all the tutorials just popping up in their faces. The default tab should stay at "What's new" but i suggest making a pop-up window after joining aeolus (like when you are moved into a tournament channel), which will pop up every time you log in, but can be turned off completely in lobby settings, it will be telling a person about tutorial tab and how to make this message not appear every time they log into faf.

Tutorial tab should start with very short introduction and telling that you can switch sub-tabs on top of the faf lobby (yeah, again, obvious :D). After which a FAQ with list of common questions regarding how faf works, all its functions, how to start the game and so on with some useful forums, youtube links mixed in. And then there should be sub-tabs, which are divided by their purpose (teamgames/1v1/senton? xD) where inside the sub-tabs they are divided by more specific purposes, like how to micro land/how to tech up on large sized maps etc. Another layer of separation would be Beginners/Intermediate, though i have no idea if you can create like a folder-tree kind of system so its all sorted there, or you will have to just make alot of sub-tabs. Ill leave it to coders.

Again, i think this would be a good starting poing for a player councilor. Im sure that any pro player with a mic and some time can create a decent tutorial, if this idea goes through I will help myself. If you are someone who is potentially the guy involved in this, please consider pushing it.

I like this idea a lot. Make it simple to mute completely, but let new players know what's up.
BRNK has some excellent tutorials up right now that I think would be perfect for this. ^^

Well, this is nothing new, everyone knows about it but no one actually working on it, so Im not sure if this post will change anything unless you will do that yourself :) .Cause saying "someone" should do that has approximately same chances for success as saying "someone give me money" :D

If there was anyone willing to do that, it would be already done and this post would not be needed...

As i said, im gonna be a part of it, if not the guy making tutorials, if the councilor and some coder help. And if not a forums thread then nothing can push people.

i suggested this a while ago but it was shot down by zep, obviously i think this is a great idea :P

in some time i might be able to help with this.

also, making a definitive community guide in the wiki would be great

Something as simple as having a list of trainers who are online at that time in the tutorials tab.
"We have our personal team of trainers, just message one of them and they'll help you out!"
<insert list of trainers online>
(have their names be clickable so they can be messaged from the page)

I had a long talk with chevalier about how a good tutorial would look like a while ago already and he's making one since then. It just needs time since he is busy. Been a few month now though..

Coders who actually get something done are very hard to find. :D And with your suggestions it would need a lot of work coding-wise to not make it look overloaded which is always bad. Since there are about 20 other things that would be nice but so far there just isn't anyone who got the time to code it, I doubt it would be any different here..

Im sure that any pro player with a mic and some time can create a decent tutorial

Everyone can make a decent tutorial indeed, and there are many already. But what FAF needs is not a decent one, it's a good one, and that's much harder.

That the tutorial tab needs a lot of work is no secret, but without someone who will do the coding, there are very limited things you can do, except linking all the existing tutorials, which might also be rather scaring people away because no one wants to bother to read or watch 10 hours of material.

Popups are bad design too, even when possible to be disabled. I do believe people check the tab, they just see it's not that great and never visit it again after they checked it once..

Maybe make the tutorials tab a web page just like the what's new tab? Then the tutorials tab could point to a wiki page, and it would be really easy to edit for anyone with wiki access. Wiki also makes it easy to organize into sub pages.

Trust me, about half of newcomers doesent check that tab (like all 3 friends i tried to get playing faf) and just derps around for a bit and never logs in again. I dont see anything bad in a popup design, there already are channel join popups and there were popups in galactic war too, they take literally 5 seconds to disable forever. And like an introductional video in galactic war, we can do the same to this popup just making it look pretty and attractive. Also i think we need really professional tutorials only for beginning level, i learned alot when was starting faf just from random phrases in ta's casts and that is pretty damn far from even remotely being a tutorial, most of the specified tutorials can be good to go with a simple planning, montage and, of cource, common sence.
I dont think any normal person would be scared if tutorials are layered properly, with stuff like "Where to start", "Your first ladder game" being up in their face. You are saying how nobody has a time for 1 really good tutorial, but when we need at least 30? xD Either more people involved or not to put impossible standarts. Well im trying to get more attention to this problem with this thread anyway.
