Rotatable Factory Buildings?

Postby Goldy3 » 11 Sep 2014, 11:15

Just a thought: Would it be nice to be able to rotate factories? As a quality of life sort of thing? Less path-finding issues, less having to wait for units to orientate themselves proper before they can even head toward the enemy. Less having teams and/or players that spawn in certain sections of the map that give them certain navy advantages because their navy factories are orientated properly facing inward, toward the enemy instead of outward, facing the edge of the map?

It would be nice. Yes it would.

It can be done, there's a mod around somewhere which allows full 360 degree free rotation of all structures. God knows how it did it though.

Of course, a free rotation would not be better, but the adaptation to have them rotate only by 90 degree multiples is going to be easy I think.

That scout seems to be leaving the factory "horizontally", while the factory is rotated a bit. Maybe some units will get stuck if the factory is rotated 90°?

One other key note is that a t1 PD is ALWAYS facing southward, so if you are starting in a south spot and enemy units come to attack you will be subject to the horridly slow yaw-axis speed. I've also noticed that the top start on a number of maps with "rush to the middle to get mass" like Arctic Refuge gets quite an unfair advantage since the turrets can be captured by a comm much easier.

Reviving the topic because of interest for 90° rotation of factories and in hope of that to be added in some way.

This is most useful for naval factories located in rivers where the mouth of the river is on the opposite side of the “launch direction” of the factory. Trying to launch a T3 battleship out that river takes ages because it has to reverse, turn, thrust, turn, reverse, etc
