A Trip Down Memory Lane

Postby Ze_PilOt » 25 Aug 2014, 09:13

It's easy to forget how much was done in 7 years.

Starting in september, and lasting until the end of the year, a new concept mod will appears on the list of feature mod : "A Trip Down Memory Lane".

Each month, a different patch version will be featured, representing an emblematic period of supreme commander.

September will be "Release!". The game as it was released on February 16, 2007. (patch 3217)
Prepare your mass fabs...

October will be 3260. It was the first introduction of new units... It surely shows how much can be done balance-wise after a new unit is introduced...(UEF T2 Bomber, Aeon Guided Missile, Cybran T2 Bomber)

November will be ranged bot war, with patch 3269.

December will be the last memory lane trip, introducing the first FA patch to be released, also know as FA vanilla (3596). Be ready to restorer!

3599 & 3603 will be skipped : 3659 is easy to remember, and 3603 can still be played on steam.

Maybe that will put some recent changes in perspective...

If you want to contribute, feel free to write a short article on each patch, or just what you remember of it. I will publish these articles on a regular basis during each patch period.

This is a cool idea. I do remember oldschool vanilla, but it's been such a long time I wouldn't know where to start.

I'm already looking forward to sera regen field.

Nah, they just allowed you to efficiently produce, therefore alloweing turtle strategies to be much more viable. FA changed that to make map control more important.

This is a really cool idea. :)

massfabs will be even better than they were in vanilla, there were no templates back then, limiting efficiency and adding a lot of risk.

Maybe it would be cool to split October into half release patch, and half the-patch-before mercies? The second half would be actually fun to play, because lots of issues were solved, and game was not again ruined by the mercy patch.

Same for november, split into the patch before rocketbots, when mercies and other things were fixed, and game was more balanced and fun to play, before showing how GPG screwed everything with the rocketbots. :D (and they realized they couldn't follow their plan to keep vanilla and FA being the same game that you can play together if two people have only one)

Maybe a bit too complicated, and not just showing how broken the game was sometimes, but also showing how it was compared to now when it was not broken by a new big change.

Oh my I remember the massfab farms and the rangebot kiting. I remember losing a game on Blasted Rock where I had three start locations and the other guy built a monkeylord because I wasn't shielding and farming properly. Much turtle. Very eco. Such gg. Wow.

What patch number is the Vanilla that is available in the lobby right now?

the released balance & the one pre-mercy were almost the same.

Also, the aeon ACU rapid fire upgrade was OP as hell in team game :)

I thought vanilla had more patches (like one every month), but memory might fail me.

Will this be only for "FA Forever" gamemode, or for ranked games too though? Edit: I can't read. Nevermind.

Looking forward to see what people think about the actual experimental T4 units too. And the slowwwww units and projectiles, giving so much more time for strategy! (even when its only the strategy of how to best place your massfabs)

And heavy nuke assist :)

Maybe the changelogs are incomplete, but it's mostly "fixed sound issues, fixed minimap, fixed AI,....".

Here is one example:

(Imagine the drama such a patch would cause in FAF :D )

If you used supcom wiki, this patch is missing in the list i.e. I don't know how many more are missing, or what version numbers they had, or if there are changelogs. GPG did often post only very..basic changelogs, if at all, and only gave more detailed later when people requested it. I don't really remember though.
