Rating seasons ?

Postby Poch » 31 Jul 2014, 10:37

Hi everyone

I was wondering about the seasonnality in FAF. I know divisions are resetted from time to time, but is there a precise timeline for this ?

As a side note i would like to bring up some questions to see what people think :

  • What about resetting (at least once) the custom-rating for everyone ? Since now its split between ladder and custom and a lot of people got part of their rating/game count with the ladder, so now it's sort of broken isnt it ? So why did no global reset took place after that rule changed ? If the rating system went thru a lot of incremental changes and now it is finally "not in early versions anymore" starting from scratch sounds good no ?

  • What would you think about real "seasons" in FAF rating-wise ? With a global reset maybe every 6 months ? Or 9 or 12 ? Just to clean the mess from time to time ^^

Spoiler: show
I've seen a lot of people recreating accounts and getting back to 1600-1800 range in less than 20 games so it wouldn't take too long to get "decent" numbers back.

I think some will afraid because after a reset, at first you would'nt know who is good and who is is not and getting balanced games would be harder. But right now if i take a player that is 1900+ but plays only ladder 1v1 since FAF came up, well on any team-game spot i know well i would crush him like if he was the worst of the noobs. Like i don't stand the tiniest chance against TA4Life or Chosen in ladder, yet i've already beaten them at air on wonder by a fair amount. Nothing crazy from my part about it i just knew exactly what i was doing, yet i am 400 to 600 points under their rating and i'm sure they had at least a vague idea about what they had to do lol. And i know i can lose air on this map to 1300-1400 ish player sometimes. Meaning they could probably have raped Chosen/TA themselves with like half of their ratings. What does your game quality say about that heh...

The best thing to do would probably to have a rating for each map and each spot :D (and you get into the duplicate versions problems and so on)

But i am not trying to raise another controversial discussion about the meaning of rating. Just wanted to talk about the reset thingy. I just wanted to prevent some obvious comment/answers from the first posts^^

[VoR]Vee: when was the last time the ratings were reset?
[VoR]Vee: or were they never reset?
Scruffy: never

It's certainly true that ratings that people got from 1v1 are not very accurate in team games, but you shouldn't overestimate the gap. Air play is a specialty, so if that's all you do then sure you beat Chosen and TA. Now play against them on a front position in a team game. Also remember that rating only changes due to win/loss of the game. So if you are extremely good at spamming ASF, but you are not good at exploiting the air control to actually win the game then your rating will stay low.

I think a soft rating reset (for example a long time ago in league it was (current rating + 1200) / 2) might be nice, but a complete reset would be way too much chaos to be enjoyable. The problem with rating resets in such a small community is that stacking games would become even easier!

Rating is two numbers: average and deviation. How about increasing the deviation of everyone by a tiny amount each day? It would have the net effect of decreasing displayed rating a little each day, but at the same time you'd be able to win/lose rating faster after not playing for a while. A ladder player who only plays team games now and then would get a higher custom rating deviation, and that way his custom rating would be much more quickly adapted to what it should be. Currently it goes so slow that if you farmed custom rating from 1v1, you have to play hundreds of custom games to get to your real deserved custom rating. For players who play a lot of games not much would change, since your deviation decreases pretty much every time you play a game, so that little increase in deviation each day wouldn't do much.

deviation is increased for each person before each game. it is because of this that it is possible to win a game and "lose" rating

increasing deviation each day is sure to bring out lots of people complaining that they lost rating, and while it could make the system more flexible, it already has a degree of flexibility and im not sure the complaining is worth it :/

also displayed rating = true rating - 3xdeviation
this means that the deviation would need to increase by a very small amount each day in order to keep your displayed rating similar. losing 3 points a day is very demoralising :/
so im not sure that this will have much of an effect

I've brought the topic of a Rating Reset many times in Aeulous. I'm 100% for a rating reset. Too much has changed in the community and too many inflated ratings from 1v1, or Specific maps. Then the people who only play with lower rated players, and will never get a higher rating. Then there are average players that play consecutively with Higher rated players on the same maps over and over and over again, with the same players over and over and over again.

I think it'd only help more players, play with people they don't normally - and increase the average rating of the entire community. I suggest a rating reset every 6 months. Maybe keep 1v1 the same for those die-hards :P

I think many people loose their skill from breaks so it would give them a chance to gain some of their skill back, the only problem with this is so many people will call you a smurf. But I think this is very much needed

If people have an inflated rating it should automatically adjust as they go along and play "honest" games (i.e. not 1v1 or other games that people are having issues with apparently). If players choose to inflate their rating by playing skewed games, does that matter anyway? Assuming that you will only meet them in your type of "honest" games they would not actually possess the skill their level implies. Therefore they would lose points losing from you. I'm not seeing the actual prolem with getting wins from 1v1 either to be honest, it reflects your skill in 1v1 games. It's almost like people would like to have seperate ratings, for how good you can spam ASF's and nukes from back position in Seton's or steamroll opponents with t1 on Theta. Or am I missing something?

I'm new to the FAF rating system. I have 15 rated games at the moment.

Anyway resetting stats generally creates a lot ot outrage. In fact it's used as a punishment for cheating (Battlefield for example).

I don't think the rating is adapted to team games anyways sadly, I mean the rating is thought for 1v1.

The rating system for team games should be redone, and at least becoming map dependant and even spot dependant, and also it should depend if you play with people you know(= you already play with them a lot or not) and even depend if you play with a mic or not, in fact there are so many factors to take into account lol...
t's not easy to make a good rating system.. =/

For example when someone only plays one map and has a high rating, he doesn't deserve this rating on other maps where he is bad or at least not as good .
What about the spot too, on some maps there is a spot for air, and spots for land, what about people who only play the land spot or air spot ... Same issue.
and so on..and so on...

And why not a 1v1 reset rating too?

I hope you see why this is outrageous and will never work.

A more important question is why do you care if someone got his 2000 rating some way or another? It's the same in every game with score. You can play Metro 64 all day on BF and suck at other maps. It's not like you get free beer for being a level 120. Is it that you leave a lobby when player X with rating Y joins, but instead you should have stayed because he never played map Z and you could have won? If thats the case, you worry too much. In old GPGnet you just played and that had benefits. When they introduced whatsitcalled website with the DNP flag and user rating, things quickly became a spamfest of insults and balance whining. In my modest opinion of course. Not trying to step on any toes just stating what I saw.
