Help! Want to learn how to model units!

Postby Redfox442 » 26 Jul 2014, 15:37

Hello all,

I am posting because I would really like to design unit cosmetics and possibly some new units. Obviously I would probably be buying some software, and that is totally cool. By design, I dont mean code!! I will have others help me code in order to produce a functioning unit and finalize a small unit balance mod. I have sketched out some of my unit proposals and detailed them. I would really like to try creating a 3d model of the unit to implement it into the game. Please POST,

Thanks!!

So you want to creat 3D units?
in Spring RTS engine page you get some 3D softwares:
http://springrts.com/wiki/Map,_Mod,_And ... t_Programs
some are paid(like Maya), some are free(like Wings 3D)...

I don't know what is the best, but they say that is Maya...
but I think that you should get a free one(or Wings 3D or Blender)

and From what I know a 3D model is a 3D model, and depends only on your skill!

EDIT- you will be looking for the one w/ the best UI...

No offense, but who is "they"? I doubt there is THE best prorgram for 3D-modeling.

There are plenty of programs out there - free software as well as pricy ones. In the end it comes down to what you want to achieve, which functions you need and what you feel most comfortable with.
To name some of the most prominent ones:
- 3dsMax (often found in the pro-level, expensive)
- Blender (free software, probably takes some time [maybe even a little more than with other programs] to get into it)
- Cinema 4d (expensive, yet another "pro" tool, maybe a little easier to get into compared to 3dsMax)
- Maya

By "pro" I mean they are used for major big budget productions.
