Leaving a game appropriately

Postby rockoe10 » 10 May 2014, 16:27

How does one leave a game 'appropriately', or at the very least kindly? I've always left by using the menu and choosing 'exit to windows'. Being I can not see what everyone else sees, is this the kind way of leaving? Many times I see people leave and it stalls the game for half a minute. Which is annoying and interrupts your concentration. I don't wont to be one of those people and am curious as to the appropriate way to leave.

I think the game stalls when people leave by Alt+F4. Just yesterday I explained this to a person who rage quit making the game stop. Obviously he did not want to be reasonable about it... Well, one more foe list entry.

I think people really need to be educated about this. Maybe we could have a pop up window that appears for somebody who has just killed the client by Alt + F4 telling them to only do so if the game is not responding or stuff.

rockoe10 kudos to you for carrying :) As far as I know you exit by pressing the score button (after no longer being alive).
If there is no score button, I think the way to go is the one you just desribed (the menu). So far, no one complained about the way I leave games but if I am mistaken let me know pls.

Edited to fix typos.

Thanks for the replies. That is what I have head before in passing, Alt+F4 will cause lagging/stall issues for the remaining players. I hope this post educates others on the subject as well. Don't want to ruin everyone's game just because I made a slight calculation error and pushed up too far.

When share is on, it's better to alt + F4, than to ctrl k + quit, because ctrl k kill your unit.
(if you need to leave the game, while still being alive)

Then only ctrl+k your ACU. Or better yet: first give all your stuff, then ctrl+k.

There seem to be 2 cases. Sometimes when a person leaves, the game hangs for a while without eject screen. And sometimes the eject screen comes and one person has to eject, while for the rest the disconnect was automatic.
Alt+F4 gives a message asking you to confirm if you want to leave. That seems to be normal behaviour, so I would not expect a problem there?
Exiting through the Score button, after your death but when the game has not yet ended, might give the problem?
Did this problem exist already on GPGnet?
I assume indeed that exiting though the menu is always OK, but again this is only an assumption...

AFAIK it has nothing to do with ALT-F4 ing since like everyone said it just pop up confirmation pop-up.
There is a quick exit option didn't check what it does, and didnt tested what happends if you kill process in task mgr maybe it triggers the timer.

From my personnal experience it is like this.

8 players game
everyone connected but 2 ppl that are connected through FAF proxy
one of them leave
Everyone has kicked (like intended) the leaver BUT the guy that wasn't connected to him.
That guy has a timeout window of ~45s before he is able to kick.

When you play with people on TS you start noticing it has nothing to do with alt-f4 and it seems more related with people not being connected.

Oh and btw, 99,99% of the time it makes replay desync at that exact time but a lot of you have noticed already.
I'd rather have working games than working replays but having both would be nice.

Is there a way to check before exiting FA if people are really connected or are connected via FAF proxy ?
