This is a bug in the pathfinding.... not sure if there is a fix for it. What you can do is place a move order if you are going far away, and then at the end of that put a patrol command on that spot. It seems to not lose patrol commands the way it loses move orders. Alternately, you can rapid click on a spot until the tempest is facing that way, and then it will carry on.

Tempests also seem to search for the nearest building remotely on their planned route and then hug it forever... -.-

When I get the time I'm going to attempt making the Tempest float a little higher in the sea to see if it has anything to do with clashing on the terrain at the bottom. Might fiddle with the physics a bit too.

I think it has to do with its edges, the pathfinding AI does not seem to take it into account. If you drive near some cliff it would be stuck in it, at least if you try to turn, same with any buildings it meets and it can get stuck in units too...

I don't think the height of the floating makes any difference..... the tempest comes unstuck if you submerge it, which would put it closer to the ground.

Yea, that's normally how I get them going. Lucky they can move while submerging and you don't have to wait for the animation to complete.
