CPU Ratings Fix

Postby Herbert » 30 Apr 2014, 08:53

Hi All

I have a new pc coming so this doesn't really apply to me anymore but might help others:

Currently I have a dual core 3ghz with Vista 32-bit. Up until about February my cpu ratings in the game lobby were 360-370. Then they became 460-470 where they have remained ever since. I think this is more than changes to FAF with it mainly being down to a previous Vista patch.

My cpu used to have an idle speed of 3ghz when set to balanced in the power options under the control panels. I know because I've played around with the power options in the past. Anyway, I have recently downloaded CPU-Z and it reveals that an idle speed of 997mhz now occurs in balanced power setting. Even worse my CPU is in this idle mode while I'm in the game lobby!

If you set your power options to high performance your cpu ratings go back to a more normal range as it makes it constantly run at its full speed.

We had some render machines in the past that had a power saving option enabled in the bios by default.

Even after some hours at 100% CPU, the CPU speed was still in "low power" mode.

These automatic things are often broken.

Another problem is that some people get their CPU rating based on 1-core maximum Turbo boost while they can't maintain that Turbo due to lousy cooling. Example: the 2860QM in my laptop has a base clock of 2.5 but a maximum 1-core turbo of 3.6. If I fully load my GPU as well on that laptop... CPU clock drops.

Maybe I'm confused, but were these render machines desktops? I thought power management was completely disabled for non-mobile machines.

No, all machines have some kind of low power mode.
