Current Ladder Rating system and general 1v1 Popularity

Postby jasonsmithartist » 19 Apr 2014, 17:30

I would like to make a proposal and also make something aware to players who do not play 1v1. Over the past few month there have been some changes made to the FAF rating system and my proposal relates to these changes.

1v1 Rating not effecting global

Why is this a problem?

Whether we like it or not almost every player in FAF uses the rating system as a means of judging how good a player is, and the rating system is there to make fair balanced matches both in team and 1v1. The problem is, that since the ladder matches have not been effecting global, we are finding that 1v1 players are not able to make any visual impression on other players via rating. No one checks the 1v1 ladder rating, because it is not displayed in lobby.

You have to understand the nature of the players who play 1v1, its the competition, like any other game, they play to win, and that is important to them, you have effectively removed most of the reason why people compete in ladder.

I think the rating system before the changes was fantastic, there was no harm done. If anything I had a few ideas on how to handle the smurfs ( I can elaborate on that if needed)

I would really like to see these cahnges made, and hopefully we will see the ladder filling up again. You have to understand that not all players enjoy team games. I dont want to be punished in score, because of someone elses actions in game.

Global Rating rounded to nearest 100

This is not so much a major problem as the one above, but lets have a think here, what does this change actually bring to the community? I say a false, exagerated version of ones rating, therefore giving a slightly impaired vision of what their rating is? I cant really see how this helps at all

People are abusing 1v1 to lower their rating, so it's not possible to do otherwise.

I understand how this problem potentially fucks with the whole rating system, what sort of scale are we talking about here? and does this scale of players compare to the BENEFITS of making the changes I have proposed. There are always going to be people who abuse, but everyone else should not be punished aswell? come on ladder is just as important as team

ladder affecting global gives possibility to this:
1. start ladder game
2. quit immediately
3. lose rating
4. you are now able to play vs lower rated people
5. repeat 100 times
6. you are now able to bash noobs
7. ???
8. profit

also from what i've seen is only people who want to farm rating via ladder want this change, and for getting rating and not for making the system more fair or other reasons, they may say other things but the main reason why they want ladder to be ranked is to get that extra rating faster. i started playin ladder much more after it became unranked btw.

want ladder to affect global? host 1v1 games and make them ranked.

as for rating being rounded:
it was a change introduced. if you're not happy with it accept that there is a reason for it and move on.
just for you here is the reason: knowing your exact rating has psychological effects on any player. for some more than others, but overall people start trying to cling on to every last scrap of it, and make themselves as high rated as possible via various means. that's not what rating is for, you're not supposed to try to make it higher, you're supposed to make yourself better instead.

the change rounds the number so that it removes that effect to some extent, making people more calm on the topic.
people were unhappy before so that's why it was changed.
also you can see your exact rating by right clicking on your name in the chat tab > view player statistics, says number at the bottom.

There is no statistically relevant difference between being 1645 and 1656.
Still, people were screaming in chat when they lose 11 points, and tried to make all game unranked to avoid losing 5 points.

I also saw people kicking people out of games because they had 10 points less than the "requirement".

That's were some stupid behaviors fueled by ignorance and too much displayed information.

How about making quitting a game under a couple of minutes too often a bannable offense?

If someone wants to spend 5 minutes of their time just to lose rating... let them, they are one in a million (making the problem statistically irrelevant)

I don't see the matter with having a 1v1 rating that doesn't impact global rating...
I got a higher 1v1 rating than global one. And I don't feel like underrated or something like on the global one.
usually before this change, you have got 200 rating higher in the global one.

I think if you want to see the true skill of a player you have got to check his 1v1 rating, because his global rating rating can higher/lower depends of his luck on his teammate. But it isn't that much a big deal. (your true level can be lower/higher by 100 in global one)
and finally, teamgame are different than 1v1. You may be a good player in 1v1 and suck at team games... so having diffeent rating is a good idea to me.

I'm unsure what the actual problem is. If a player is good at teamgames then his global will increase! If a player is good at 1vs1 his ranked rating will increase. Seems good to me. In fact the point of the rating system is to have a balanced game. Under the previous system many 1vs1 players had a global rating that was much higher than their actual skill in teamgames which would distort the balance.

I don't understand what the issue is? Is it simply because 1vs1 players want to have a good global rating despite being bad at teamgames?

Btw, after this change searching replays by rating became ultra irrelevant, cause its taking player's global rating into consideration even if you select 1v1 ladder mod.
