LAN Party (offline FAF server)

Postby Stin » 14 Apr 2014, 16:02

I saw a thread that said the FAF lobby was open source (although the link in the thread didnt go anywhere).
Is this is terms of the client lobby or the server code that runs the back end?

I ask because I was at a LAN party over the weekend and we wondered if it would be possible to host a FAF server on the LAN so that we eliminate internet issues, yet benefit from the new features implemented in FAF.

Thanks.

You are aware that SupCom in itself has a Lan-mode? Just start the game and select multiplayer/local.

the client is open sourced, you can download it and do what you want afaik.

you dont have to though, if you want a lan party then just open the forgadalliance.exe in C:\ProgramData\FAForever\bin
this is the modified faf version which contains all the latest patches (assuming you have them, which you should)
however, you should always try to use the client where possible as faf thrives off users being online.

A short while ago I was at a lan party and we just played through the client, went as smooth as LAN (not many more bottlenecks than LAN since everyone is on the same WAN IP of course). If you don't have internet access you can just use the exe indeed (we found it easier to use the client since we played FAF mod, Nomads and Phantom).

The amount of data FAF needs to keep you connected to FAF and let you establish connections with the LAN game one of you has set up, is probably next to nothing. When you're playing, the p2p connections are forming the bottleneck, so you just need a good switch that can deal with them all at the same time.

If you're with 8 people and all eight are playing a different 4v4 game, then the connection with the opponents all over the world will be established and only then will your upload/download speed of your network become a bottleneck.

If using the offline exe make sure that everyone has the same files/mods etc because they will not be able to update as they do through faf which can cause desyncs

Would hosting through FAF form a p2p over the LAN, or to the global IP of the network, since FAF doesn't see the LAN IP so you'd be connecting to the global IP that FAF sees?

FAF will detect you are behind the same router and you will use your local IP.

Hey guys

First, sorry about my english! But lets try to ask you some questions.
Soon as possibel, i want to play at home with 4-8 Players some FA games.

Online:
My Internetconection is 40/4 MBit/s. We use the FAF Client.
The Goal is to play together or in groupe against you (online). Does my Internet supports the traffic?
Would that work or has something changed? What i have to be aware (streaming at the same time etc.)?

Offline:
Long time ago i was in Frankfurt and we started a small LAN (15Players) without Internet. We played with the ingame Lobby but cant remember, that we had all the Mods aviable. How to do the settings to get FA running with the possibility to activate the mods?
I know at the beginning there was a issue with the connectin and later we startet to connect trough a server (routerfunction i guess).
The perfect thing would be to run a FAF Server. Is there a chance to configure one? Important, i dont have big experiences with Server & Co.

Greetings
