Navy not moving in a straight line

Postby ax0lotl » 08 Apr 2014, 23:09

This must have been discussed earlier, but I did not find such a discussion.
Is there any reason why units on water do not take the shortest path to their destination?

2 examples. Watch while pressing shift to see the move vector, just play at +10.
- On Seton's from right rock's beach to beach: 1 riptide taking the automatic route, the other being microed to roughly take a straight line. The un-microed one moves mainly west first, seemingly heading to mid, later changes direction to southwest. The microed one takes a shorter route and arrives earlier.

- On Ozone Islands. A riptide and a barracuda ordered to move from top right to bottom left. Again, they move mainly west first, until they find a 45° angle to go southwest. When crossing an island the riptide takes the normal direct direction.

Would a fix be possible to let the units take the direct path on water?

No.

I know you don't want to hear it, but AFAIK that's the answer. Pathfinding issues are a bitch.

Whomp whomp.

But I'm also guessing it's legacy at this point.

One day it might be fixed. While I agree it's an issue, I can't say it's something we should be too concerned about now.

Pathfinding isn't the best, but it's not terrible either. The day will come when we fix it, but the roadblocks between now and that day are too big to worry about now -from my understanding.

Cue resin fixing this with one tweak of code. XD
