Updating Ratings

Postby Gorton » 10 Mar 2014, 18:58

With the influx of new players, many people have been unable to join games for the first week or so due to ratings not being updated until the end of the week. This could be avoided and keep the same effect by a rating update either every day at the same time (midnight) or possibly at the start and midway through the week.

yes i agree to this
0 rating is a real problem for new players, and they could play more than 50 games from monday to sunday and still be considered as 0 rated by others

(and yes i am aware that they can host their own games, but just after joining a new game community - would you check how others do it, or instantly go do your own stuff?)

I think a special updating for low ranks is okay. But keep it weekly for most people, I like that.

As in, for rank zeros, they update every game for 10 games then weekly like everyone else.

That would help a bit.

It also might be a good idea to make the rating cap out at 0 as well; ie make a negative rating displayed as 0

It's hard enough for 0 rated players to find a game, I imagine a lot of people have left after losing there first few games, then getting kicked constantly for low rating. It really shouldn't have to be done but I think it is a good idea

I do agree, we want to try and retain new players, updating the rating more often for maybe players with <500 may be a good idea.

It may also be a good idea to match new players only to low rated players on ladder. There have been many people complaining that they get stomped on ladder, who knows how many have just quit silently because they got discouraged.

It's already the case.

Obviously to some extend, or real new players (0 games) won't ever find any game.

When I first played ladder, I went up against at least three 1300+ players (as my first opponents ever) before someone even remotely near my skill matched with me.

It was awhile ago and I played at an odd hour -but still.

It's perfectly normal for your 5 first games, it's the same in starcraft 2 by the way.
And it can't be otherwise.

Also you had a popup warning you about it.
