Could your average idiot in the street play SupCom?

Postby Flynn » 07 Feb 2014, 18:15

I am wondering, I don't think they could, I would say you need above average IQ in order to play this kind of game. Some people even struggle with simplistic strategy such as C&C and Starcrap. So yeah, would your average man in the street be capable of playing SupCom? Thanks.

At best, IQ is just going to determine how fast you learn from your mistakes and improve.

IQ has little to do with your ability to play a game. Seeing as moving units around isn't exactly that hard as it is, assuming you can use a keyboard/mouse playing this game is straight forward.

Now playing a decent first game is unlikely for nearly anyone. And a terrible first game can leave a bad taste.

I know my first games where against 1500+ players in ladder and I just died trying to build mexes first. XD (OMG, I have one factory and you're sending 30+ units at me!)
I then went to watch every single game I played to see what the other guy did, emulated it, and now I'm a nice mid 1050ish (and I don't play that often).

Then there is my dad whom is smarter than I IQ wise, but can't stand multiplayer games but loves this type of game (vs predictable AI).

So yea, IQ had little to do with it. You have to like this game style enough to put up with the learning curve. Or better yet, enjoy the rewards of winning enough to put the time in to win more often.

Well there is a difference between playing and becomming a top player.

as long as you have a small talent for strategic games, multitasking and can aford the time it needs everyone can play it

PS: I would love to know what sort of education the average Supcom player has :) or we make a nice IQ test :P

as Zep wants to remove the rating anyway we could display the IQ of the players instead and try balance with it :)

I think the average SupCom player is educated to degree level at least. Some with masters and even Phd. I think you have to be smart even to play the campaign in this game. We are in a minority and that is for a good reason, imhao.

This thread is hilarious I'm not sure if it's serious or not but I have a friend who left education at 16 is not smart at all and when I play him he stomps me, admittedly that isn't a hard achievement but still he is a "good" player, I don't think education, to a certain extent, has to much of an impact, I think there are other things that play a larger role.

Education to a large extent is just a collection of knowledge that you memorize, not actual intelligence. Don't know why it would affect your ability to play SupCom. However I do believe that SupCom is favored by an above average intelligence playerbase, simply because of the eagerness to learn it requires.

You would probably find a correlation between supcom and not being an idiot.

But thats probably just because.... You know.... Its a video game...
