^What?

Says who?

On topic: I always assumed they moved at the fastest possible speed all units considered. Haven't tested one unit formations enough to actively notice this. But in hindsight, you are right, they do slow down every is it's all ASFs or something...

Wonder why that is. It's not very logical and I doubt all formations are slowed down by the same amount.

The formation moves at (I think) 80% of the speed of the slowest unit. So a formation with all the same units moves at 80% of the top speed. This is so that if you select a unit that is some distance away it has a chance to catch up and join the formation as it will move at top speed to get with the group.

I recall reading this on the GPG forums and I think the outliner units that are trying to join the formation even get a speed boost. There was a conversation about how players can abuse this to get their units to move faster. They would select a large clump of units at your home base as well as some retreating units that are under attack. You would then do a formation move at some corner opposite of your enemy. The units retreating would then get a speed boost to meet with the other group. I do not remember how significant this was though.
