FA has a lot of graphics enhancements, but sound is left over.

I would like to start discussing reworking some sound effects.

On of the common gripe against FA is that the sound effects has less "kick" than TA. And it diminish greatly the level of destruction that happens in the game.

Ie. the mantis laser.

So, is there any guy that is really good at creating sound effects?

I really mean creating, not ripping it off other games/movies : That would be illegal.

Be warned that it's not easy to add new sounds in the game that are properly integrated in the engine. For instance, it's easy to add sounds that are played at the same volume wherever the place you are you looking at on the map, but not sounds that will be played differently if they are at some distance from the camera or this kind of nice sound distortion.

I think this technical difficulty has to be overcome before someone actually puts efforts into creating new sounds. We encountered it in Nomads, so we're interested in a good solution too.

What still hurts my ears is the shooting-sound of the flash in TA.

Never done sound design before :D I've always just used sample libraries and synth presets

I don't hear the resemblance of any energy weapon in that sound. It sounds more like a rocket launch.

Hope you don't mind if I spam a couple of my experimentations to this thread. I'm bound to eventually do better than the FAF sound effects guy, who probably didn't concentrate on a single sound nearly as much as I do.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/nr7zkf0t8bsp166/lasergun2c.mp3 this one sounds much more like an actual lasergun! A little... dissonant... though.

I'm doing it completely for the fun of it, but yes it'd be nice to see some of it implemented if I reach that level. And competition would of course be great if anyone has experience in sound design.
