Battleship radar

Postby whootle » 10 Jan 2014, 01:32

Hi guys,

I notice that the battleship says it has radar (and it does.) But in the unit database, the radar and vision range are the same - both are 50.

Since, as far as I know, vision beats radar in all regards, why not simply remove radar from the battleship? It would remove any "misunderstanding" if they look merely at the battleship description and expected it to have radar (in any useful sense.)

I don't understand what you're talking about.

If there's stealth, radar is useless (and vision reveals it anyway.)

If there's cloak, both radar and vision is useless. So no idea how vision is going to help with a mole, since my understanding is that it is cloaked.

Radar detects cloaked units. To be completely invisible except to omni you have to have cloak + stealth.

Oh, so having cloak doesn't imply having stealth as well? OK.

All other units in the game that have cloak also have stealth as well right?

Wrong.

Stealth and Cloaking are two separate countermeasures. Stealth defeats radar and Cloaking defeats vision. A unit which is cloaked but not stealthed will be invisible, but detectable by radar. So if you ever see a grey unknown contact in your field of vision - you know it must be cloaked. If you don't have radar, it could be right next to you and you'd never see it.

Stealth on the other hand, it to prevent long ranged contacts. It allows your units to avoid detection as they close range. But will not prevent them being targeted when seen.

How are they annoying. They are perfectly understandable. A cloaking field makes something invisible and stealth is a radar detection countermeasure.

Something cannot truly be undetectable until it is both stealthed AND cloaked. Which means you need an omni sensor. Seems simple to me.
