How can I setup a supcmom game to be more like trench warfar

Postby TheCommander » 16 Dec 2013, 13:49

Hi guys, ive come back to supcom (FA) again as Ive found nothing that quite scratches the itch like this game but please give me suggestions if you have any- trying out sins of a solar empire as heard it is similar in some ways but not been able to get into it yet admittedly havent tried too hard as ive just been playing FA again :)- was very disappointed by the total war series games after reading all the rave reviews- battles were soooooooo boring and formulaic i lost interest after a cpl of hours with that. I havent found another game to match the feel of where you start of with nothing and build yourself up to a mighty force- base builders seem to be out nowadays probably pandering to the ADD culture shunning micromanagement over instant action. Thats a shame for me cos base building and micromanagement is my favourite part of rts's.

Anyhow, with skirmishes in single I find that they usually go pretty much the same way. I will start a game and play up to 20 minute mark. i struggle to fight off the incoming forces (im kind of a turtler btw enjoy really building my base up before doing offensives) and its pretty even but invariably I fail to build my experimental on time :D then get pwned as I reload save games from earlier to get my own experimental up for just the time the enemie's is arriving.

Thing is tho i find that experimentals pretty much wreck the dynamic because like i said if i dont have mine up then its game over for me but conversely as soon as i get mine i find the game swings grossly in my favour such that its no longer a challenge then mine just slowly plods over to their base and destroys everything.

Now I could try turning off experimentals but i would love to find a way to incorporate them without spoiling the game cos i find them fun in all other respects.

Up to that point in the game i had been struggling to get my mass together and get enough bots to fight the waves and waves that keep coming but once the exerimental is up it just levels everything- i only play uef so with the sensor it just keeps blasting everything within its long radius and things suddenly become desolate around my base as nothing comes close.

As the title says Id like to have games where its always close and that I can play indefinitely where i am always inching for more territory. Kind of like company of heroes you know the pace where you are always trying to creep more to gain more territory. I could just play company of heroes i guess :D.

With the experimentals it kind of wrecks that dynamic because your just racing to get the experimental up at all costs then once its up the game is over. I spose thats why they are called 'game enders' :D so is there any other way to make it still be fun and challenging so i could be playing indefinitely even after the experimentals are up?

I recently got sorian ai working and it does offer some new tricks, its more challenging for sure. Its only my first game using sorian i have only just killed the enemy experimental on that so maybe he has some new tricks for me maybe not.

Also I know online would offer a whole new world of challenge but that idea doesnt really appeal to me cos its already hectic enough in single player and I like to relax and plan out strategies. Also it is too much hasstle to coordinate when to play with someone else so that doesnt suit my tastes.

Suggestions? Im not familiar with all the mods out there (or even the different vanilla lobby options) sorian was the only big one i came across so maybe with mods or changing settings ppl could advise me?

3 things

1st: all AI's suck (and giving it 3 times mass&buildpower doesnt change the fact that it sucks, it just makes it harder to defend at the start and denies any offensive actions)
2nd: Skipping 3 tech levels doesnt work vs a anyhow decent opponent so saying that T4 is wrecking balance is not viable, infact a T4 land will for example lose to T3 havybots masswise
3rd: In a "serious" 1v1 it's exactly like you describe how you would like it, try to grab mroe and more mapcontroll, raid your opponents expansions or rush his base, 1v1 games most often dont last until exp-stage.

My suggestion: play online

If you check out the map vault here on FaF, and put in "survival" for a keyword, there are a bunch of maps designed for just digging in. The AI sends larger and larger streams of higher tech stuff as the game goes. Highly entertaining if turtle is your thing. There are usually custom games going on for one as well, if you are looking to play with others.

It's clear you have just started to learn, how the game.works and I hope you 'll change.tastes. Enroute.
I 've learnt to respect people's tastes though, so to be useful to you:
You could try thermo. Games, Isis no rush x2, no air,, gap of rohan, rush me more etc.
There's a. Constant pop of players playing these maps each night.
Even if you play only these types of games, playing online will make you better, AI is only to.get you started, like the first gear in a car.

Also try the new coop campaign. It's a lot more challenging than the original campaign and you can play with other people that can assist you if needed ("GIVE ME MASS NOW!!!").
"T2 mex, I think it's a mistake! Why not do something more useful?" (RA_Zlo in a ranked 1v1 game against Yarma_Darma on Haven's Reef)

i doubt my computer could play online, i only get 2-4 fps as soon as things get going. it becomes like a slideshow so i doubt that would be suitable for mp. i just love the game so much tha ti endure this.

Also i get immediate crash to desktop when i try and launch FAF. i get this with many newer games. maybe ill upgrade my old amd3200 one of these days :D. i just hardly ever play games so it hasnt really been justified.

Amd 3200? I'm using a 3000 for a keychain right now, lol. :)

Time for an upgrade, even for office and web browsing, eh?
Peace through superior firepower.

Definitely upgrade your computer.

On the fact that you suddenly get the big advantage with an experimental. An experimental on its own is good. It wrecks bases and it can easily decimate T2 armies. However, it is powerless against the stronger T3 bots.

You can still use Experimentals well, even against such T3 armies. What you need is a good defensive position (A couple of shields, some Point defenses and some of your own T3 bots) and you put your experimental in it. It'll give a good amount of damage without sacrificing the Experimental's Hit Points).

In case of your UEF Fatboy, the effect of turning the tables is even bigger because those things just happily fire at everything in range, softening the enemy units up and letting your own kill them next.

You can mod fa to more closely resemble trench warfare through a sim mod. Simply prevent building t2 t3 and t4 air, and reduce all unit movement speeds to half
