Attaining Higher Rank

Postby Flipper » 09 Dec 2013, 20:15

Aside from the obvious - watch replays of better players, and play more - what is a good strategy for increasing your rank?

I can't seem to climb up from the point where I am. I would say that I"m on the winning team at least 60% of the time, but my rank only grows VERY slowly.

Also, the ranks for 1v1 are seperate from those used in teamplay, correct?

Thanks for indulging my potentially silly questions!

There are sort of separate ranks for 1v1 and team play. However, I believe that the "team play" rank actually incorporates your 1v1 matches. Basically, you have a global rank that takes into account both 1v1 and team play matches. Then, you have a 1v1 rank that only takes into account 1v1 matches. I have been told by multiple people that playing 1v1 is a great way to improve your team rank, whether that is because it makes you better or because of the mathematical way that the global rank is calculated I'm not sure. Someone who is more familiar with the ranking system could probably answer better.

I don't know what rank you're stuck on, maybe it's above mine, but I saw my rank rise pretty rapidly from ~800 to ~1300 over the past few months. I don't think I win an extraordinary percentage of my games either, and I feel kind of overrated. I try to play a lot of games where I'm the lowest ranked player in the game, which I feel probably helps you improve and also increases your rating more quickly.

My real recommendation if you want to increase your rank is to build a bunch of corsairs and kill the high ranked player that's closest to the front line. Oops, did I just give away my only strategy?

It's VERY hard to get a matchup on 1v1, especially one that is fairly evenly matched. Most of the times that I try to play a 1v1 ladder match, it doesn't find anyone for a long time, and I end up joining a team game. When I am able to get in a 1v1 game, I'm usually outmatched or I get placed against a very inexperienced player.

Not complaining about FAF mind you! I am very grateful for it's existence. I guess it would just be better if more people tried to fit in a 1v1 game more often.

I think I should practice playing 1v1 on larger maps against the ai's too. I have a lot of trouble playing 1v1 on larger maps.

What rating are you? If you're <1200 my best advice would be to play unranked on maps you like until you get better, than start pulling up your rating with playing ranked on that map..

My advice for getting high rank (which I don't have, obviously), is to not worry about rank. Focus on your mistakes; and on how you can exploit the mistakes of others. You'll get better eventually, if you analyze your own play, and spot major issues with it.

well dont listen to Omit thats an stupid advice. It wont get you better at all.

If you want to get better you have to start playing vs slight better players than you are.
host oyur own ranked game if you dont find some on the matchmaker.
start with the smaller maps like theta , blasted, cansis, and a few other 5v5 maps.

on that maps you dont have to take care on eco. jsut try to take care on your unit micro, reclaim and map control.

If possible play a few games on the same map and the same player and compare those game with eachother.

and also we have a "Help me im a newb section" and a Personal trainer team.

I would suggest 10-20 ladder matches a day.
study every single replay you make, wins and losses, to understand how and why things happen, what went well, would could have been done better?
some days I set myself a target of winning at least 5, and wont logoff until I do.

imo, relying on team mates in team games doesn't truly reflect the difficulty of FA. ladder is where the challenge is at.
looking at other peoples replays only helps when you fully understand what is happening. besides Pros do things the rest of us cant handle :)

if you can maintain that 60% win rate in Ladder, your doing well.
also, higher rank increase from winning a ladder game against a higher ranked opponent, than team games.

I find that insulting when a game is stating me the obvious ("press X to open the door" the 20th time I see a door).

As Smith said, best way to improve is to play against better opponent and compare your actions with his. Watch what he's doing, try to copy and do it better, exploit his mistakes, this all goes.

Also remember to take it gradually, the first and foremost thing you must do - is to work on your early game and starting BO. I heard a lot of players saying "i dont know what to do on this map" and this is just wrong. You should always have a somewhat clear idea what you will be doing on a specific map and how you want to do it. Starting with smaller maps is a good idea as well as they are mostly played alike and dont recquire much tech. Then you can move to bigger maps, learn when you can/should go t2, eco, navy, air etc.

Fortunately, there is enough room to improve up to top players - this where real fun begins :)
