setting up FAF standalone on windows 8

just installed FAF and tried to setup a standalone short cut (as described on the FAF wiki). i created the short cut but when i click it the screen just goes black with a bigger than normal arrow onit.
any advice would be much appreachated

Have you run FA before on your machine? Your problem sounds like you have not setup your settings. Try running FA (through the steam shortcut or whatever shortcut that runs the game). Setup your video and sound settings and create a profile if you do not have one already. Run a quick skirmish match with the AI and just end the game, not exit to windows but exit so you can go back to the FA game menu. From here exit out of FA to windows.

If all is good, try running a private game through the FAF client if you have internet connection so that everything is working there. If you have no network connection, then try running the shortcut you had created again.
