Performance question

Postby cogwun » 28 Oct 2013, 19:15

Ello, I thought I'd check to see if FA is performing to it's potential. Found some info about a patch that patches x86 executables in order to let them have 4GB (instead of only 2) of virtual memory on x64 platforms. Does anyone know if this'll give a performance boost with FAF on my system? I'm running 16GB ram on windows 7 64bit. Here's the patch http://www.ntcore.com/4gb_patch.php

there are theoretical cases in which a process can be accelerated with a bigger address space, but certainly forged alliance is
not one of them.
in 99% of cases where this works, the program is forced to use the hard disk often because of memory shortage, which isnt the case for FA.
the other 1% is exotic. as in: a program compresses its data in memory to avoid the harddisk. certainly not the case for a real world app like supcom.

Thanks rootbeer you're right.

I ran some performance tests with the supcom performance tester. Patching the forgedalliance.exe to use 4gb made no difference to FPS. The thing that effected my FPS the most was anti-aliasing so I've switched that off. All the other graphics options apart from resolution seemed to have a minimal effect so I set everything to high. Resolution makes a bit of a difference but the loveliness of 1920 x 1080 is worth it for a slight drop in FPS. For anyone interested in running the built in performance tester here's some instructions I found on a different forum:

"There is a Supreme Commander Performance tester built into the game it self, which can help you tweak the game a little.

Copy and paste your supreme commander icon on your desktop. right click and select properties then add to the end of the pathname for the icon. /perf

For you noobies out there you will see this:

Where it says Target :"C:\Program Files\THQ\Gas Powered Games\Supreme Commander\bin\SupremeCommander.exe"

Add this at the end so it looks like this: "C:\Program Files\THQ\Gas Powered Games\Supreme Commander\bin\SupremeCommander.exe" /perf

Click the new Icon and you will go into the games performance testing utility. Exactly the same process works for Forged Alliance too!

Different test and just some fun for you guys. Anyone playing supcom and expecting to enjoy large multiplayer games without lag issues should be looking for a score of at least 15300 sup com marks. Anything below that = [thumbdown]

Note: as a rule of thumb more MHz your CPU puts out the better the game will run ..see SC is a CPU intensive game.
Also if you are playing with other players check to see who is really slowing the game down with the following command
ren_showNetworkStats"

To use network stats command, you have to open the console first using the @ key, or sometimes the ` key (on my keyboard layout anyway).

The bottleneck field (top left), will usually show you the person who's bottle-necking (causing the lag), but this isn't always conclusive, as sometimes it flickers. In the table section of the netstats screen, the data behind column is also a good indicator of who's lagging.

To exit the netstats screen, just type ren_shownetworkstats into the console again and press enter.
