The Application of Starcraft Leagues to FAF

Postby Swkoll » 30 Sep 2013, 03:00

I took the leagues of starcraft 2 HOTS which is for the most part a percentage based system, and I applied it to the 1v1 ladder leaderboards of FAF. This is the ranking in 1v1 and what league you would be in if pilot used starcraft's league system.

1-6 Grandmasters
7-53 Masters
54-477 Diamond
478-948 Platinum
949-1702 Gold
1703-2173 Silver
2173-2356 Bronze

This isn't actually useful and has a number of flaws such as the amount of people who play starcraft actively is much higher than the amount of players that play FAF. Also top starcraft players are much better than top faf players in terms of practice and skill so just because you are in a rank in FAF doesn't mean you would be that rank if you played starcraft. Hope someone found it interesting.

I think this is really cool, but It would be neat to see it in terms of the average weekly/monthly amount of players that long on faf, vs the total amount.

@yama dharma : so ?

I think that FAF is actually giving lots of opportunities to its users .... almost too many for our actual stable playerbase.

BUT

I can notice while I'm connected and lurking the chat that lots of people complain about looooong long searching time because few people are pressing that search button.......

Ladder needs some love , I'm saying this since forever.

A smarter system which shows if someone's searching and more rewards for ladder results would be really appreciated.

Let's analyse what is actually discouraging people from playing ladder :

1) losing points & 1v1 anxiety (because they are not used to play it)

2) long search times

3) lack of map veto and consequent fear of playing that map you hate

4) slow ladder career progress (you have to wait months to get that promotion)

I think we can work on those points.

I'm firmly convinced that a stable competitive playerbase can drag FAF to last years, we can't let it die like we are doing.... otherwise FAF will become a meeting point for sunday setons and thermo players.

What about being realistic and start by giving me some good rules for a league system (instead of the basic "you win, one point!").

I assume this is answered somewhere, but why not go with +1 for a win and -1 for a loss?

Also, would you want the league rules to give bonus points for beating people higher than you, or should it be totally fair/rating independent?

I got an idea of a system that would reward players for playing and allow them to move up to the next league even outside of season change. This would be parallel / indepedendant from the True skill rating (no influence).

There would be 5 leagues and you would move to the next league after a predefined number of victory points. You would only face opponents of your league, or the league directly below, and the league directly above you. You gets a victory point whenever you beat an opponent of your league, 0.5 points for beating someone from the league below, and 1.5 points for beating someone from the league above.

Inside your league, you would have ranks that you would automatically gain after scoring enough points. Maybe there can be a penalty for not playing (for instance, not playing for one week cost you 1.5 or 2 victory points from your total).

Here is an idea of layout (the numbers are a rough idea, no clue if they are good in the long run, probably not):

T1 league : needs 40 victory points to move on to the T2 league
rank Mole = less than 10 points
rank Mech Marine = more than 10 points, less than 20
rank Aurora = more than 20 points, less than 30
rank Fobo = more than 30 points

T2 League : needs 60 victory points against t2 league players to move on
rank Blaze = less than 15 points
rank Pillar = between 15 and 30
rank Wagner = between 30 and 45
rank Ilshavoh = between 45 and 60

T3 League : needs 90 victory points against t3 league players to move on
rank Titan = less than 15 points
rank Loyalist = between 15 and 30 points
rank Othuum = between 30 and 45 points
rank Harbinger = between 45 and 60 points
rank Brick = between 60 and 75 points
rank Percival = between 75 and 90 points

Experimental League : needs 120 victory points against Experimental league players to move on
rank Atlantis = less than 15 points
rank Tempest = between 15 and 30 points
rank Novax = between 30 and 45 points
rank Monkeylord = between 45 and 60 points
rank Fatboy = between 60 and 75 points
rank Ythotha = between 75 and 90 points
rank Galactic Colossus = between 90 and 105 points
rank Megalith = between 105 and 120 points

Game Ender League :
rank Yolona Oss = less than 50 points
rank Scathis = between 50 and 100 points
rank Mavor = between 100 and 150
rank Paragon = more than 150

The first player with the most points in rank paragon, game ender league, gets the special title of Supreme Commander. It is lost if someone gets more overall victory points in the Game Ender league, Paragon rank.

What do you think of a system like this? Pro / cons?

How about:
- you gain/lose 10 points for each win
- you gain/lose +/- % points for beeing +/- % above/under the average trueskill rating in your leauge
- you gain/lose +/- % points for a +/- % higher/lower rated player
- you lose - 15 points per week if you dont play for 1 month

What Shepard says. Perhaps some clarifications should be made regarding the last point, I.e.
1. What points are those, ladder or rating points?
2. How many times you must play per week, in order to not lose points
etc.

quite obviously league points, rating points would make no sence
