Make the nuke sub tactical missle behave like a tml

Postby H-master » 22 Sep 2013, 21:39

If it's technically possible, it would be cool to see the nuke sub behave like a tml-acu or tml building.

Right now, the thing fires and gives away it's possision for a land scout. The sub would become very cool if it could sneak in range of the enemy base, fire a deadly salvo of tm's on highvalue targets and sneak away.

It would be even better if it could fire them simultaneously as is seen in the early screenshots of supcom.

This behaviour would be achievable. A mod could be created to give the behaviour you describe. However, I suspect that the TM inventory would conflict with the Nuke inventory. I suspect that the one unit would not be capable of holding both missile types in it's inventory, at the same time.

The Missile Submarines used to be way cooler in vanilla SupCom. Because of the tracking missiles. They could be used for sniping destroyers. Now that missiles don't track, they are significantly less useful. I have to admit, the idea of sneaking off the shore and unloading a volley of missiles does sound appealing.

However, the problem you discribe, with the missiles giving away the submarines position is poor contol on your part. If you wish to go undetected you should set the submarine to hold fire. Because the missiles in Sup Com Forged Alliance are usless in the anti-ship role you should disable them. You should already have learnt this in Stealth 101. I suggest you revise your course notes

Actually, I hardly ever use it's tactical missle's at all in it's current state.

Hmm... The picture you describe is, if memory serves, of a sub multi-launching nuclear missiles, not tactical ones. You can pretty much already do this now, as the reload time is very short - it will fire the nukes about as quickly as you can press the button.

Firewall seems to me to have stumbled onto the ultimate solution to making StratSubs useful, popular, and usable again though: Restore missile tracking on their cruise missiles.

To me, that makes them unique. It makes them interesting. It makes them useful, and it makes them worth building. This is a good thing!

tracking missles were far more usefull
now its even better to toggle atack mode so they dont know you have a strat sub

I would rather have the subs behave as mobile TML's than a mobile nuke launcher anyway. But perhaps that is just me.

I like the idea of strat subs firing high speed missiles with slight tracking... its enough to hit the big t3 ships, but everything else can dodge

Slight tracking could be achieved by:

1. Allowing the missile aim to lead the target;
2. Using a tracking missile with very slow turn rates.

The aim would be to allow general targeting of moving objects, but prevent missile correction on the terminal approach. So micro is still effective.

Am I the only one who doesn't like missile tracking? I remember this same conversation when people wanted a homing toggle on Aeon/Sera TMLs. Weapon classes should all behave the same way, there shouldn't be one type of TML that homes when no others do.

The idea about being able to build separate tac missile or strat missile subs would be preferable to that, even given how much I hate creating new units in the core game.
