Ladder map pool

Postby Jiday » 20 Aug 2013, 16:54

Hi,

Since the recent ladder map pool change, I have seen (and done) a lot of complaints about the maps and the way they were chosen. Obviously, no system can please everybody and I'm aware of this. On the other hand, I think some aspects of it can be changed.

Some maps are, in my opinion, not balanced (ie The Dark Earth, Forbidden Pass) particularly because of the water and need to be removed. This is particularly true since the Aeon buff. At least, for The Dark Earth, fixing the spawn locations so one of the player is not closer to the third island (although this would not reduce the Aeon and Seraphim huge advantage to secure reclaim here).

For the map pool choice, I'm not very aware of how it worked, but I feel like it was the decision of only a few players and the majority of this community driven game did not have a word to say about it. Am I right on this ? If so, would it be possible to improve this ? Maybe a vote system to include or exlude a finite amount of maps like on GPGnet, or some kind of "thumbs up" and "thumbs down" system (but I think this has already been discussed).

What do you think about all this ?

Be first of your league so you can decide maps.

the majority of this community driven game did not have a word to say about it.

The majority of voters don't even play the ladder and vote for stupid maps.

well forbidden pass is indeed unbalanced, there is a rock on the top side (big one next to the base) but not at the bottom maybe someone with working mapeditor can fix that

I mostly agree with Jiday.
The current mappool is quite imbalanced in some ways :

-Too many navy/water 10x10 maps (heaven reef, eots, white fire and the dark heart forbidden pass are all some good maps, but can't be in the mappool on the same time, it gives a too big advantage to sera and aeon.

-forbidden pass (north rock and south start cliff) and the dark heart (start location are not symetrical) (the close positions should be avoided to withdraw the very early advantage of sera aeon). Concerning this point, it would take 5 minuts to a Map maker to balance those (hey prince koecher if your around ^^)

-Also the way mappool has been decided is still not good (i agree it's better than the old voting system ;) ) but can be improved.

Well it was my point of view even if i'm unactive in those summer times.

See you!

The pool is decided by people who play it the most and the better.

If it doesn't please you, be that player.

End of discussion. (understand : I'm sick of trying to find a system that please everyone, because there is always some people to whine about it).

I don't think playing the most means playing the better. I also don't think those who play the better should be the only one to choose.

Also, why end the discussion if it's the best way to let the community discuss how to improve this system ?

I think it is.

Ok, what is your ultimate solution that has not been tested in the past already?

What about letting the division winners pick 1 map from, say, 4 or five categories? Rather than just pick the maps they like the best.

I think the game you want to play is Starcraft 2.

First, there is no "ultimate" solution.

RoundTabler's suggestion is interesting. Maybe divisions winner could vote for 1 map in, 1 map out. Other players could vote for, say, 4 maps out, 4 maps in. All the votes could be conducted with a specific selection of maps (thus avoiding people voting for "stupid maps").

Based on the choices the community makes, FAF admins or a few players in charge of the maps (maybe the same who do the balance testing?) could balance the pool so we keep a good proportion of 5x5, 10x10 and 20x20 maps.

This would give a nice reward to divisions winners, give the ladder players who care about the map pool a chance to vote, and avoid the selection of maps almost nobody wants to see.

Again: this is not a "ultimate" solution, but I'm sure it could be a good starting point for more talk. Let's see where the discussion brings us.
