Maps in the Mapvault

Postby ColonelSheppard » 17 Jul 2013, 23:42

heya peoples,

recently i was looking through the mapvault because i was looking for some new maps for ladder, and also for some nice maps in general, and i was pretty much shocked, especially when i used the "map rating" filter.

The max. plays/downloads filter works a bit better (Twin Rivers second position). But the problem i have with this filter is that new maps will have problems and also that this stacks up for Isis/Thermo variations like Gap Of Rohan and Isis X vs X and also for ladder maps of course.

Infact the mapvault includes much crap, i dont exclude my first map, but at least i did the best i could to desing terrain and so on, but some maps are just so incredible ugly and poorly desinged that i don't think they should be in the vault, same goes for some "troll maps" like "team speack".

I think the mapvault is pretty un-nice for new players and also old players that look for new cool maps.

So do you have any ideas how to make the mapvault more accessable?
Or what is the general opinion on removing maps from the vault, for example by putting all maps that should be removed into a list and the creators got once month to protest with a good reason?

For a good ladder map try this - Serenity Desert Small
I played a couple of times on it, and i think its a good map for 1v1. Also it has double hydro at start, so expect fast gunz or heavier air :)

You could have some sort of filter that if a map hasn't been played for 3 months, that it probably doesn't deserve to be in the vault. Alternatively a "recently played" sorting on the map vault.

The problem with such a filter is that it currently takes out the nice maps as well.

The rating system doesn't work because ugly maps get very high points because of a few people who play these weird rule maps all come over to give them high points. The people who make nice looking, well balanced maps don't get this and are behind from the first go.

So these maps don't show up high in the rating system, which means that they'll not be played soon. A filter that removes them after 3 months will just add a problem instead of taking it away...

I would suggest a Map team (similar to the current balance team) or single admin to manage the maps. The admin team could approve a map first before it goes live or reject it with reason to the author; they could also clear any rubbish in the vault.

It there is a desire to keep maps that are deemed ‘poorly designed’ then maybe two categories should be created: ‘Unofficial’ and ‘FAF Official’ (maps which are approved by the Map team). The lobby could indicate if a game was using an official map, players would then know it had been approved and would therefore be balanced. Only ‘FAF Official’ maps would be used for the matchmaker.

I think the map admin team should also have the responsibility of selecting the maps for ladder rotation, ether they dictate which maps are to be used or offer a selection for voting, they should listen to suggestions but ultimately decide. This process should hopefully avoid the mess of the last maps selected by a community vote (e.g. Waters of Isis), thankfully Ze_Pilot overruled the voted maps with more sensible choices.

+1 for this. It would be good to have certain maps be verified to be balanced and have a certain visual quality.

If that were to happen than some guidelines would have to be posted.
