FAF Community Podcast / Vidcast

Postby Crayfish » 06 Jun 2013, 12:49

With the rise of FAF, it has been great to see the rise of an established caster community providing high quality daily content for the scene and bringing the game to the attention of new players. The fact that there is a group of successful casters and the solid view numbers that the casters are now getting, Gyle's casts getting between 2k & 4.5k each, show there is a real appetite for regular, quality Supcom media. Combine with this all the important events that are going on with FAF, Galactic War, balance changes, new mods, new strats, that are eagerly discussed & debated on the forums all point to a regular (perhaps monthly / weekly) community supcom podcast making perfect sense right now.
Currently, information, analysis and debate exists, but spread accross the site news - forums - youtube, so I think people would really enjoy a podcast that brought together the important news from FAF, along with discussion and debate about GW, balance changes, tournaments and the ladder, top players, strategy etc. Furthermore, a podcast would have the extra element of real time interaction between the hosts, FAF staff, players and listeners / watchers and giving a human voice to the names wee all see in chat and in games. The FAF launch show already did this to some extent, and had some great features with Zep and guests like Sir Loui. There is an established model already in place for Twitch - Skype community vidcasts like this one:

Some of the casters like Gyle & ZaphodX would make great hosts, with perhaps TA4Life heading strategy / balance discussion with some of the top players, call ins and discussion with community members etc. Everyone involved could have their youtube channel / twitter onscreen to promote their own content and if the cast is a true community effort there is already the FAF twitch where it could be cast:

If the cast was mainly undertaken (hosted, produced, uploaded to youtube etc) by a single individual (which is allot of work), then I think it could be quite rightfully hosted on that individuals Twitch - Youtube page also.

This is something that I, and I'm sure others, would like to see, and seems like a very logical step for FAF and the FAF community.

To be honest when it comes to discussing the game I think commentaries have a broader appeal. They serve much the same purpose as podcasts but you've got interesting visuals and a competitive match going on as well.

That said I'd be happy to listen to a podcast while on my commute. I have a suspicion the audience for this kind of thing would be limited though. The launch shows are good though. Particularly when you've got interesting guests like TLO and Chris Taylor.

a regular podcast would be an excellent idea, to further increase the knowledge about FAF's existence, and provide info to people who aren't necessarily avid forums readers.
even at its very smallest level, a sort of weekly GW update to keep people apprised of latest galaxy war efforts sounds cool. at least when it goes live.

I find that insulting when a game is stating me the obvious ("press X to open the door" the 20th time I see a door).

how about you use the mumble server for it?
this way you can create a new "podcast" channel, with all casters inside and advertise on the chat to join the mumble server... when you want to interview somebody, you only have to invite him/her to the caster-channel.

an even better idea would be to put somebody on twitch, who can show what the casters are talking about. e.g. the forum thread, the game they are analyzing, show the changes in the latest patch, GW, or a best of casts on youtube...
but please upload it not only to twitch but save it to your hard drive as well (this is easy, if you use the software "open broadcaster software"). this way you can upload the high quality version to youtube.

the best idea would be to produce a show like that with an irregular time table, but record everything, edit it and upload it to youtube. (e.g. like this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sBl1fwEpsLQ but as a podast). this way you can cut out boring moments and you can eliminate the lag (between you and your twitch stream reaching the guys, who comment on it). i would like to see a cast with 2 or 3 people talking instead of just one! maybe these casters can talk not only about one single game, but about all FAF related things (the casters should "faf around").

Just a heads up about dual commentating.

It's impossible unless your doing it live. The computers get hideously outofsynchronisation and it devolved into technical issues.

That being said. This is great idea

I can vouch for this, it's extremely difficult.

Would a google hangout with screen sharing/video work? I've been itching for an excuse to try it out, and I'll have time to start something like this in July

Something along the same lines but, not streamed has been in the back of my mind for a year+ now.
Something like a weekly or a biweekly show that would have segments coming from different contributors.
Example: Someone does a recap of tourneys like wwpc, recap of ladder standings/global rating standings. Highlights from top player games, links to casts from that time period, new of upcoming tourneys, regular segments talking about strategies, regular segments about build orders.
This could vary from week to week and each segment should not be longer than a few minutes.
For me the problem has always been time, to put all this together, but I would be glad to contribute to these segments, if someone wants to take over the organization part. Editing and uploading, etc.
no ui lag: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3MdcVdL2kIY
I think this is going to be fun
