How active is FAF?

I played Supreme Commander and Forged Alliance at release and for about two years afterward. However, I hadn't played it in a long time when I decided to look into it again. I saw that GPGNet has been taken down, but the forums led me here. I'm wondering how active FAF is compared to the old GPGNet community. Is it hard to find games? Are there certain peak times when it's fine but otherwise more difficult? Are there only a few game types that are popular, or can you find a variety of game types? I lost my old CD key, and I don't have access to the old computer I used to play FA on, so I'm assuming I'd need to repurchase FA on Steam to play, and I'd like to make sure that the community is reasonably-sized before I'd do that.

Lowest players online is around 170-200

Around 700-800 at peak times

Wow, thank you for the quick replies! That's helpful to know. It sounds like it's as active as it was for most of the post-FA time that I played it then . . . .

I'll probably look at picking it up sometime soon then, although I appreciate the offer.

I got FA off of Steam, although I'll probably brush up on my skills a bit before getting clobbered online!

Thanks for the video links; they were quite fun to watch. I do quite love the full simulation of FA, and it certainly does lead to some entertaining situations . . . .

did you have different CD keys for your copies of SC1 and FA?

I also found my way into FAF through those awesome casts, and had never actually played FA after SC1...

I was advised from these forums to put my SC1 retail CD key into Steam, and Steam allowed me to download FA at no additional cost.
hopefully, this might be a solution for you.
if not, see you soon when you cant fight off the urge to buy FA from Steam and join us in FAF

and yes, extremely active. Ive found FAF to be a far better thing than GPG ever was, ease of playing modded games, live replays, constant updates, great community!

It usually doesn't take long to find a game on FAF and if you have to wait it is still worth it. As Nom said, the amount of players range from around 200-800

just a small note: nothing in singleplayer will change that you will get rolled in your first online game xD sry^^
