APM, Configs etc of top players?

Postby Crayfish » 27 May 2013, 00:25

Have seen a few videos on youtube showing how top Starcraft players physically play the game, their apm and other details.

I was also just reading Uberge3k's 'G13 layout' thread and that got me wondering about how the top FAF players play the game. What kinds of APM do the top players have, do they use specialized keyboards with key binds and gaming mice etc, are they using multiple screens - mini map, what are the common UI mods that they use and why etc, etc? Is there allot of common ground on how they play, or does it vary greatly from player to player.
It would be cool to see a video about

You can see APM with FAF chart. It shows strange results sometimes, though. MisterWhite tends to have spikes of 1000-1500 APM :p

Gets affected by UI mods and macros I guess... APM of top players are generally between 50 and 150 (without UI mods/macros/bugs). Have seen few playing with less than 50 (at least in 1v1) or more than 150 (just one actually).

im yet to judge my APM using FAFChart, but playing FA with dual screen is something I really want to try.

I find that insulting when a game is stating me the obvious ("press X to open the door" the 20th time I see a door).

I switched to Hotbuild shortly after posting that. Completely useless for a week until the muscle memory kicked in, then it was worlds better than the G13.

My peak APM was an average of 80, peaks of 150-200 while fighting or reclaiming.

Other than that, all I used was a basic laser mouse and a mechanical keyboard.

Still a far cry from the true pros of yonder. Pic had a constant APM of 300 when he and rock played 2v2 on the GPGNet ladder when it was active at the start.

Note that FAChart doesn't take into account when a game is slowed due to the game being paused or slower simspeed. If the game is paused, and someone uses that time to queue a bunch of orders, their APM will seem to skyrocket as all of those commands are entered on the same tick.

That's one reason I like Supcom more than other RTSs. APM is important here, but the law of diminishing returns kicks in much faster, allowing slowpokes to make up for it with clever strategies such.
