Anyone else miss the old Cybran beam Lasers?

Postby Crayfish » 27 May 2013, 00:01

I was away from FAF for a spell and when I returned, Cybran's T2 PD and the Rhino had lost its old awesome looking beam laser and been given a generic 'pew pew' laser in its place :(
I do understand that there were problems with the old laser, like with tracking - missing targets etc, which is why I guess it was changed (is there a thread about the change?), but I was never that bothered by its weaknesses, and just put it down to factional diversity. Cybran aren't known for great turtle play..
So my question is, would it be possible to have the look of the old beam lasers, but perhaps with the back end functionality of the new? Anyone else miss the old ones?

While we are on the subject, does anyone else feel that the Rhino might need more tweaking? I'm seeing high level games on pure land maps where Wagners are being built (or Wangers as TA4Life calls them:) but Im never seeing Rhinos built, ever.. I understand some people may want the more front loaded damage of Wagners in certain situations, but if they are being built on pure land maps over Rhinos, then there must be a problem somewhere. If Rhinos are meant more for going against T1 units, maybe they should be a bit cheaper to get them out earlier, or they should just have more armor or something to buff them?

i too miss the awesome beam laser. maybe if engimod was implemented, and rhino's where given more speed they would be used more. the problem right now is that rhino's aren't good at anything. mantis are better at harass, and hoplites are better vs spam, and wagners are better at absorbing damage. so i think rhinos should be better at harass so its role doesn't overlap with the wagner.

I think the visual effects looks a bit different, but overall I think the turret is far more effective since the patch changes.
efficiency > looks.

I find that insulting when a game is stating me the obvious ("press X to open the door" the 20th time I see a door).

I believe the reason for the projectile change was due to the fact that the old laser is not drawn if the source is not visible to the player who is being targeted. Performance was not changed, as far as I know.
Play the Beta.

As to appearance, the lasers where only hitting target about 50% of the time and possibly worse on moving targets. 3 lasers means that the actual dps was from 33%-66% of the 116 [?] that you paid for. This made the already-worst-of-all-factions Cerberus even worse. The problem was cause by the way the game engine tracked "non projectile" shot, and so could not be corrected. This is why the projectile was added. The turret and rhino actually do what they were meant to do now. If I am not mistaken, there are a couple people already working on getting the looks back to normal without killing the performance again.

As to the specs on the rhino, please wait for the next balance season for open discussions :)

I don't think anyone disagrees that the lasers look worse now.

But gameplay and balance is king, and they were pretty broken...

I really like the current short pulse lasers than the old long beam ones. In the end, it's a matter of things not being buggy and I'll happily have either of the two with that sorted out.

I generally do not understand why people and games use the word LASER for a gun that shoots much slower than light.
I liked also the view of the old, but the new ones are traceable from greater heights.
also they shoot with an arc, something we could like or not... noone likes to shoot into the sand while the artie is shooting and shooting.. and again, an laser that is shooting with an arc and is watchable while travelling... well, then the distance between the units should have some 300.000 km between them...
but anyway, the PDs have now some effect!

Welcome to the 20th century science fiction world, where lasers are everywhere and things make sound in space.

Well, lasers are already everywhere...
When it comes to explosions in space the sad thing is that those film makers don't even bother to make them somewhat logical on earth either like when the sound is immediately there as soon as you see the flash 10 miles away and why every fucking car has to be tanked with nitroglycerin?
