Advice for the noob players with lots of games please.

Postby mondaymoonlight » 24 May 2013, 20:43

So I've noticed this with a few others like me, who stick with this game even though the games deeper mechanics remain a mystery and are considered permanent noobs. I for one am getting sick and tired of the only advice given is to watch a replay. I've watched replays and they have really warn out there usefulness long ago. For about the 200-300 games I've played basically the same game despite my best efforts. Attacking and building my resources up to building bigger and better things seems to be the goal. I have all the wonderful ideas for dynamic attacks but I never have the resources to carry them out. I've been told I build too many upgrades, while that's fine for some games others I''ll face t2 and not have the resources to counter. I think the resources tend to big my biggest downfall. I've watched plenty of games and I've noticed people tend to outproduce me even when they have less resources and I think that is my biggest problem. How do you make more units with less resources? I've played many latter maps and trashed all the enemies mexes and won an early eco battle only to be out t1 rushed. This makes me discouraged because if I attack well I should get the upper hand early on but the opposite happens. So basically how did people unnoob themselves out of the 1200 range and up my unit/resource ratio. Most games are running together, even when I try new things and it's getting so frustrating.

hi, did you try reclaim stones, destroyed units etc?, other thing is not to build many things in the same time, for example you need only 1 energy storage. If you play 1vs1 move your commander with some units to frontline or 1 side of the map and the most of your units to other side, you should get some map controll

agree with Java, biggest difference ive noticed between pros and us noobs, is reclaim.
and in time, you gain an understanding of exactly how much each thing costs, without even having to look, and therefore already "planning" the next move before completing the last. I find I spend less time looking at the buildings bar now and more time looking at my mass bar for the first few mins.

when im in ladder games, my understanding of each map's best locations to reclaim vs build order, is still improving.
someone with a better knowledge of a particular map has a certain advantage.

also, scouting is essential to decide your actions and counter what the enemy is doing.

I find that insulting when a game is stating me the obvious ("press X to open the door" the 20th time I see a door).
hallelujah, amen.

Most of the advice we get is just to scout to check where is what and I feel that is wrong, or a half truth.

Know your opponent.

Scouting tells you what kind of player you are facing, that is more important than just knowing where he is. Luckily, scouting the player shows his forces also.

I can't give you pro advice, but I did/do still sometimes struggle with echo, it only started to get better when I stopped worrying about negative echo - that is what reclaim is for. Mostly I don't reclaim because I'm to busy shooting stuff with my ACU. But the times that I do reclaim and just go mad with building things, I survive allot longer.

I watched the replay and I would have the same problem. I guess this game need noobs.
But valuable info given by Sheppard.

Anyway even in team games I sometimes mess up in balancing eco and making units. I mostly stall at some point.

I'm also one who has asked around for advices, reviews and all that jazz. I have been told to watch replays mostly to see what others are doing and all. Also got a few specific things thrown my way, ex: scout, reclaim, raid, etc etc.

I learned quickly that none of those things actually work... At least not by themselves.

Of course, certain maps and certain factions have a 'way' to be 'opened', a starting strategy or many strategies that are viable but that is about all the guidelines you get.

No Sup Com game follows any procedure really, it is a question of following a gut feeling, gamble on a strategy, adapt it on the fly and counter your enemies strategy. It's hard to give general advice when games are more of a case by case thing.

In short... Only practice makes perfect.

One thing that I find helps a lot is to have a post-game discussion with your opponent. Knowing what they were thinking and when they did things as they played makes watching replays much more enlightening. Of course, that's not always easy to do when you're not playing with your friends.
