Bomber double dropping

Postby FunkOff » 29 Apr 2013, 23:48

This used to be an issue, but then I specifically remember writing code for FAF patch that didn't allow bombers to drop bombs under, like 80% of their maximum speed, but I watched a game of Solace vs TA4life on williamson's bridge right now where Solace double dropped a lot.

Where did that change go?

If a bomber is out of fuel it will drop 2 bombs per pass with a full reload in between. Not sure if this is what you are referring to.

Funk means that bombers can again be microed to drop multiple bombs per pass by making the bomber stop its flight, even though code was written to prevent this. You can get the things to hover and dump bombs on targets now.

He's talking about the fact that you can slow the t1 bomber down, fire, and slow it down again before it moves. If you're good with micro, the bomber can barely move (it takes much practice). Rinse and repeat, in this case Solace used it for an early engy/pgen snipe.

Slowing down the bomber to get radar and select the target is a key part of the early micro. A speed limit will hurt the bomber's responsiveness in those situations. If you want to address the behavior in that replay, put a reload timer on the bomber. That caps the DPS without making the unit not fire at all in some situations .

That said, I don't think this should be changed at all - it's not broken. This action adds depth to the micro that is not easy to do, costly in terms of attention needed with a fast loss of the bomber if mobile AA is on the ground. The reason TA4life hurt so much was because he had no AA at all.

Here's the replay.

Yeah, I knew about that. It is especially hilarious when someone does it with a t4 bomber, but I had thought the bombers were still fixed where you couldn't do that. Ah well.

I was just having a look at patch notes. the "fix" for the problem was to increase the reload time by 1 second.

Yes and the funny thing is that it is totally useless to do it with a T4 bomber since the reload time is gigantic, you could let the bomber attack automatically and it will be just as fast as it would be without micro. If you know that you cant make another pass, stopping the bomber over a valuable target is a good idea, though (due to death explosion).

It still easily works with T1 bombers and even with T3 bombers... that is very difficult and risky, though.

Double-bombing is wrong. The ability to micro for radar coverage etc is fine, but the fact they can drop bombs in this manner just feels wrong, and this game is all about feel. Funk's solution is perfect, but it seems to have gone missing, or never got in in the first place.
