Seraphim T2 point defence missing targets

Postby Anti-Distinctlyminty » 27 Apr 2013, 22:50

Hi all. Got a problem here with the lovely beam type T2 point defence of Seraphim missing their targets.
In the attached replay at about 38 mins at the rear of my base (I'm in the South) a drop was done so I spammed up some T2 PD, but they just kept missing whenever the target was moving.

Is this a knowns thing? I did a search but couldn't find anything.

It missed a couple of times on a strafing Aurora. It looked a bit odd, but it did hit afterwards and all the Auroras died.

Whenever the auroras were moving, it missed. There was exactly the same problem with Cybran T2 PD that was recently fixed. It looks like it's leading the target slightly too much.
There's no way this is working as designed - T2 PD of any sort should mince Auroras.

I believe the seraphim destroyer has exactly the same problem, with torpedo defenses.
Specifically the cybran t1 I think.
I will add a replay when I get one.

All beam weapons have this issue, they will shoot ahead of their targets when they are moving 50 % of the time. The Seraphim t2 pd has got a lot of DPS over the years to make up for it, which was not the case of the Cybran t2 pd. As for sea units, it's not much a problem because at long range, you can dodge bullets from other destroyers more consistently than the beam will miss so the Sera destroyer still has a big advantage.

I too have noticed that sera destroyer beams consistently miss t1 torp launchers. Obviously, the torp launcher is not moving. Don't have a replay, but it seems to happen every time. They hit a point behind the launcher.

I'd say this warrants a discussion by those in the position to do something about it. Who do I have to tell? Ze_Pilot I'm guessing...

I am not totally sure on this, but I know Pip or another will correct me if I am wrong ;) I think that the problem is with the calculations the game engine is running (something we can't change) and not with the units. If I have my facts straight this is why the projectile was added to the Cybran PD as it was only delivering 33-66% of the damage potential on a moving target. With the Seraphim beam, as Pip was saying, they just added DPS so that things pretty much broke even with the other point defense. Something to do with the engine not being able to correctly calculate an instant hit without the projectile to track... I am out of my area of expertise so I will leave it at that.
