Should you go t3 mex's without capping?

Postby A_Naked_Girl » 25 Apr 2013, 02:37

I have seen replays of players such as Voodoo and lappen sometimes upgrading mex's to t3 and then capping them after (on maps such as canis river). I always first get storage around all the t2 mex before taking them to t3 one at a time. When is it viable to just jump directly into t3 whil and then cap that mex, n even do that to multiple mex's rather then caping all fist? Not assuming there is a giant chunk of mass laying around to reclaim.

Is this method more efficient depending on what u wanna do or something?

If you are either in full eco mode or have a massive amount of mass then yes it is more efficient to upgrade first IF you can finish it fast enough. The return on mass invested is faster if you cap after, but the investment is bigger. If you are worried about producing more units, cap first. If you are eco building and you have several mex close together that you can tech up quickly and cap immediately, then upgrade first.

so simple, how do people have problems with eco management

FA is a game of economic micromanagement (what StarCraft players mistakenly call 'macro') and tactical trumping (e.g. T2 PD countering T1 Spam).

Well I'm just used to getting all t2 mex's n then caping them all asap with 2-3 groups of engies before going t3 one at a time.
Shall have to try it the other way I suppose.

If you are referring to Seton's this is a bad idea. Your eco is so spread out that if you cap after the mass loss from adjacency is greater than the gain from t3 then cap.

its always better to build mass storage before t3 extractors.
if somebody is not doing it, they are making a mistake.

The quantifier here is time.... IF you can upgrade fast enough eg some mass in storage and 12+t2 mexes with positive eco building no units, enough mass in storage to just do it, or reclaim, and a ton of engies to get it done ASAP. If you can upgrade it very quickly you do get your invested mass back out faster with the up then cap. If you are upgrade without assistance or with very little, then yeah cap them first.

if you have tons of mass, build storage first and upgrade a different capped mass extractor to t3.
if you have tons of mass, it does not matter anyway.

Honestly the time frame is so small on this that it will take a few days to analyse the time threshold that is optimal because the t3 will always beat the t2 capped with time, its just how fast it happens, will it take no time or will it take 10 min, that is what you need to decide before doing this type of upgrade, its just that the capped always provided the most benefit while upgrading because your most likely fighting and you you never have enough mass for a fast t3 upgrade, plus you'd rather make 9 instead of 6 mass while upgrading which can add upto a lot, in 1 min its already 180 more mass then the t2 which almost pays for one of the storages by itself.

if you have really alot of mass and build power, you can just reclime t2 mex and build t3 instead, if you build it faster then [mass you get from reclime]-[income of reclaimed mex]*[time you spend to build(not upgraide) t3 mex] then you are more efficent... Even if [ ]-[ ]*[ ] = 0 you saved some power anyway because all that time there were no mex working ^^

If you did not understand, note that when you upgraide from t2 to t3, t2 mex disappears to nowhere
